Your secret song

These guys were like the Beatles of the Francophone world. They sang in Creole, just to make things even more incomprehensible for English speakers. Basically unknown in the US. It's my secret song because nobody I know has ever heard of them, much less heard them. Also because Georges Decimus wears a helmet with horns.:D

Reminded me of this one, you might like it (played by a very skilled gentleman that is not me):

"What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes. I had to learn this song for a band I was in and I winced when I found out. Turns out, it gave me a lot of room to (tastefully) improvise and I really enjoyed playing it. It also helped that the singer pretty much nailed it! My preference is to play hard rock, classic rock, and hard rock/blues genres.

The country-rock band I play with gets pretty soulful/funky:

Superstition - Beck, Bogert, & Appice version
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
Lost in the Parade - Michael McDonald
Right Next Door - Robert Cray
I Can't Stand the Rain - Seal's version

Definitely not what the crowd expects but we always get a great response for tunes like these.

Does phrasing Count?
I play on two different Worship teams and often we have guest vocalist that are very well known here in B.C.

The written part for our music is very simplistic for it is just the lyrics with the chord changes over certain words.

Anything you play around this is really improvisation. It is all up you, so I use my years of playing in Jazz and concert bands ( on other instruments ) to play my bass parts.

The two vocalist I mentioned, the closest I could describe them is this; one is like playing with Mahalia Jackson and the other is like playing with Aretha Franklin.
It is an honour for me to be asked by both of them to back them up.

My secret songs I use to keep my phrasing skills are these.

Many of you will not agree with me but the Flute solo for Elvis in “American Trilogy” is the best solo in any type of music I have ever heard.

Best instrumental between a horn and violin. Master class in phrasing.
