Not yet mentioned but got me to the double bass: Marc Johnson. Also love Dave Holland. ECM label artists hold a special place for me. Open, soft sounding DB. Perfectly placed notes and the rhythms. I’m finally in two groups, after many years looking, that have great interest in this sound. I may have found home… for now.

And there are many other recordings, Sam Jones with Cedar Walton, George Mraz on Elvin Jones “Youngblood” and many others, Don Thompson with Ed Bickert, Buster Williams (that bad sounding piano duo with Renee Rosnes that is on Youtube) and many others; every one so different yet amazingly beautiful.

Thread Drift: I have now heard three or four different recordings of "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware, and Wilbur's solo is very similar on all of them...which is both fascinating and infuriating.

I first heard a version ~30 years ago when I was in grad school at New England Conservatory, and professor Tom Pollard had us transcribe Ware's solo. And every subsequent version I've heard uses a lot of the same motifs, shapes, and form as that version I transcribed ...but there are just enough differences that I know "nope, that's not the recording Tom played us." And now I can't find that first recording I heard!!!!

But it is pretty cool how Ware developed a specific vocabulary for blowing over that tune, very compositional in nature; makes it overt that he's playing over "Softly..." as well as that it's him playing.

THis thread shows how wildly different everyone's concept of sound is, and should be integral in the discussion of sound/basses/pickups/amps/strings.

This is one of the obvious answers. Sam Jones was the first player I had no problems of recognizing. David Williams, the successor in Cedar Waltons and Clifford Jordans is also pretty great, and much in the same realm.
