Zero mod thumbrest

Owch...you are breaking my heart! closer to the bridge is very problematic!
I worked that idea quite a bit but the only feasible design I could devise was pretty big
and pretty elaborate ( bummer as I would like to accommodate you).
The thing I am working on is way more humble.... Just like the classic Fender but sitting
on a parallel with the "E" not a pitch like the classic. And sitting about a 1/2 inch lower.
I will try and find to drawing to post of both so you can see the situation.

Well, I just mean closer to the bridge than the standard rest that sits between the p-up and the neck. What I've been trying to do is find a way to mount one around where the pick-up is, as that's where I usually play.

Here is my free idea, it sounds like others are pretty close anyway. I would make or buy a thumb rest that mimicked a B string in location but with an E string size like .105. It would be cool if it could be made from a section of old strings we all have laying around but I don't see how to make it rigid (insert blue pill joke here). So, a .105 size rigid, chrome rod to parallel the E string. Different lengths available but the longest should go from about the mid pickup to the end of the neck, to allow hand movement up and down that whole area. It would also be good to have a steel bar version knurled to mimic a roundwound string.

Free idea #2, do a MiniMod version. I think some people would be OK with a hole in their pickguard just not the Bass body, so make a version to attach holders by drilling from the backside of the pickguard, countersunk to accept a flat head screw. Attach (screw on) bar holder or thumb rest holder, re-attach pickguard. Think bathroom towel bar assembly as one design style or a bar with two 90 degree bends and threaded in the end, think kitchen drawer pull. :thumbsup:

I'm going to test drive a new prototype for him in the next week or so I hope. 50's Classic Vibe Zero-Mod. Interested to see the design because I mocked up one for him and it was extremely long. Lack of holes to mount it to.

The 50's classic vibe /Tele Bass rest IS ON THE WAY...But as a micro operation we move in lil itty bitty steps!
($$ capital $$ is equally micro for us!)
YES eventually we hope to offer that - We are trying to get an in house little CNC going to do more and better protos
and to do one offs and very small demand things (like my unit for Guild B301 - NOT many people are looking for THAT)

And REMEMBER - Many times an existing model can be modded to work for another - Like how we now can
do Lefty for the new Ric4003 by flipping and modding a Righty, Or The Fender Jazz for people who keep that
honking big plate over the neck pickup - You CAN use a ZM if we cut 10mm off the heel of the unit!
COMING SOON - Sterling, Fender Reach (improvement on classic Fender block) Fender Vibe /Tele Bass, Fender Mustang,
Fender Jaguar is almost ready to come out.

Eventually - Ric 4004 Cheyanne Laredo (got a cool design)

I play down by the bridge too, for the stiffer strings and tighter sound in my case, but I could never bring myself to put more holes in my basses for a thumb rest there, though I would like one.

How do you mod yours to accept the rest in that area?

We have had many requests for "up to the bridge ways" mounting and we are still exploring it for all
basses, got nothing going yet. But grab a piece of scrap acrylic and a Dremel and let your imagination guide you:D
That is how my whole thing started. I desperately wanted a rest for my mint Ric and couldn't imagine
making holes in it. Went from that to the Jazz to The P Bass (that one was tricky and I am really proud of it)
Then the Stingray, many more in process.
Will certainly put the word out when we explore bridge - ish mounting!

And a direct replacement for stock Fender rests that is lower profile.

Just for reference, here's a quick thumb rest bar that I recently put on one of my basses for a customer. It's a simple piece of ebony, shaped kind of rounded, and stuck down with some good double-sided tape. As long as the bar has some width and surface area at the base, the tape has plenty of strength. But, it can also easily be removed or repositioned with no damage.

A life saver, thank you groucho! I had to fork out $65 to get your product to Norway. I guess you won't see half of that amount, but a big thank you! I was about to get me another Stingray with two pickups to sort this out, but this morning a google search and ebay came to my rescue! A lot cheaper to get that thumb rest than a new bass! :hyper:
