The scope of the build went went a little beyond just the electronics package. It's been fun dreaming this instrument up and having Joe support it. I've provided Joe with the pickups, electronics, and a fair amount if the hardware for the build. I got to go to his shop a couple if weeks ago and pick out top wood too. The only two pieces I haven't actually seen yet are the neck and the bridge. So hopefully it won't be too much longer.Update?
But to answer the original question on this thread, he was fine with a different electronics package, and even got excited when we added the third pickup.
I had an amazing featherweight Sonus 8 for a couple years, some time ago. One of the very few basses I miss. It played, looked and sounded incredible. Can't wait to see your completed one-off, it will be killer no doubt.
It was an early one, in fact the very one from the Bass Player review. I bought it used, but the grain pattern was unmistakable. So it had whatever he was putting in the first year. I was playing through a Markbass F1 and a pair of Aguilar GS112s at the time.
I'm sure it was the same electronics. The one I have is a '96, originally bought by Monty Colvin of Galactic Cowboys. I think my problem with those pickups is they're closer in output and tonality to a J bass than anything else I have, so they wind up sounding thin when everything else is dialed in for the pickups in my other basses. (I may be having an epiphany here) Huh. I...may need to play with my new EQ2 pedal some and see what I can do to level it out. But, in all fairness, something was wrong with the Bartolini preamp in mine and it was distorting some in the high frequencies; the Nordstrand was a major upgrade.
Side note: I kinda miss Aguilar's GS line. I had the 4x10 and 1x15, but I always drooled over the GS412 and never got to play one.
Yup. Bartolini X4 shells, one coil per string. Er, per pair of strings in this application.
Since I swapped the neck pickup for a Bartolini Classic Bass split coil the bass and treble are extended and it overall is smoother, but something still doesn't sound the way I'd want it to, like it's fragile or brittle sounding. It's hard to explain.
Right? 5 years later and still waiting. I did get this picture about a month ago. So it's actually happening, and hopefully soon!
