Zoom B2.1U input distortion

Has anyone else experienced input distortion on their Zoom B2.1U when playing a high output bass through it? My Modulus M-92 5 string has big ‘ole EMG pickup with a very hot output. The Zoom signal distorts when I really dig in. This occurs with the unit in bypass or with the effects chain engaged. There seems to no way to adjust the input level of the Zoom, only output levels. The only way I’ve been able to overcome this is to back off the Modulus’ output level. Not a big problem, but it would nice if I could just set an input level for the Zoom. I love the Zoom otherwise. Effects, headphone amp, computer interface… everything I need in one box!

Your overloading the A/D converter. If the unit has no imput pad switch or input level control, then the only way to not overload it is to back off the bass volume, like you've done.

I have noticed this as well, but I also prefer the sound of my passive corvette through the zoom, so the stingray has been staying in the cupboard lately.

I'm resigned to the fact that my stingray overloads about 25% of my pedals so the EBS MicroBass comes into play a lot these days, matching levels between basses.

Funny, my Stingray has the lowest output of all my basses (see my siganture). Nothing about it sounds broken / wrong and the battery is always fresh. I use a MXR Microamp to boost its level! My Stingray is a 1991 model - is that era known for having low output?

Mines a mere babe, 2003... if you really wanted to know about '91 models, the folks over at the EBMM forum are super-nutzoid fanatical about such details and really nice too boot. Plus Sterling Ball himself is a regular contributor.

I am only comparing it to my passive warwick though, so maybe other actives are even worse! Heavens to betsy! (oh yeah, my old-main-image is coming along nicely...)

I have repeatedly dropped my pickup since buying it, I think I might even go lower still.

I bought the B2.1u just a couple months ago and noticed distortion in some of the patches right away. After a bit of playing around, it seemed like the compressor was the problem for me. Once I turned it off I didn't have distortion any more.

I don't think this sort of thing shouldn't happen on a device touted as being designed, in part, as a recording interface. I don't think the unit is good enough for studio recording --- even in home studio --- if you can't even use compression.

If it weren't for the fact that the B2.1u has a number of other useful effects and a DI and that I can run them without the compressor this baby would have been on its way back to the dealer.

Don't forget that you can reduce the gain by fiddling with the rightmost knob in play mode, I'd try that and see if there's still distortion.
CraigG, remember that the compressor patch has a gain setting as well, again, it's controlled by the rightmost knob.

Near as I can tell that's an output level of the patch, but the distortion seems to be on the input side. ie; twiddling the knob doesn't affect the distortion.

I know this is an old thread but I am getting distortion as described even with my passive P bass. Any ideas?
