ZOOM R16 Vs. TASCAM DP-24SD

I know this is an old thread (2016), but I'm currently looking at the following and trying to read up and get all the info I can before making a decision on which one to buy.

TASCAM DP-24SD 24-track Digital Portastudio - $499

TASCAM DP-32SD 32-track Digital Portastudio - $599

Zoom LiveTrak L-12 12-channel Digital Mixer / Recorder - $599

Zoom R24 24-track Recorder / Interface / Controller with Loop Sampler - $499

Zoom R16 16-track SD Recorder / Interface / Controller - $399

I just want to record an entire album with each instrument / vocals having it's own track. Drums obviously will have to be done on a seperate take.

I only know the Tascam 24SD and have zero complaints. I think the decision depends on whether you are going for a mini home studio, or are you more likely to want portability? If you want to move it a lot, the Zoom is the better option. For home studio work, I'd go Tascam.

Yes, I still have all of them.

I don't mind moving it. It will only be taken to where we set up to to record, and then back to my computer room. So that's not really a factor in my decision, whatever that ends up being.

Also take a serious look at the Zoom F8 and F8n. They are true multitrack field recorders with better sound quality than the portastudio models. Between $600 and $1000. They can record at 24/192!

I think the new Zoom LiveTraks are on another level than the decade old R16 and R24. I think they even have the same preamps as the F4 and F8. I wouldn't buy one of the older Zooms. But alone for the features I would prefer a LiveTrack.

May I ask why? And which Zoom do you have?

Issues:

- noise on some channels unless you turn the phantom power on off
- low gain on one channel (also see above).
- driver issues sometimes resulting in the unit changing to 96kHz sampling rate when used as an audio interface.
- construction could be better

There are many good things about it but unless very constrained on budget I'd suggest spending an extra $100.

I'd go for the tascam 24sd based on the spec stand connectivity

2 weeks ago the prices on the Zooms dropped by $100. I was going to order an R8 at $199 just for the drum machine and extra interface. Waited till the weekend to do it, checking the price every day --- and BOOM! Back up to the old price.

No idea what that was about, but I'm still bummed. The price was dropped universally, too. Checked several stores.

For me right now it is about the money. I don't have a PC/laptop that I can dedicate to recording at the moment and the cost of buying a good one would be twice what the TASCAM will cost let alone the added cost of software, interfaces and so on.

I want to start small and go from there.

I am unsure if you checked out some of the less expensive (and more portable?) options from Tascam, like the 8 tracks (DP008 EX or DP006) or 4 tracks (DP004) ?
