Zoom ZNR for Single Coil Hum

Hi all,

So I just thought I would share that I have been using the Zoom Noise Reduction effect on my MS-60B+ very effectively to get rid of single coil hum on my Jazz bass. I find that single coil hum in a gig setting is only really an issue when my amp is at a high volume and I'm soloing one of the pickups AND it's a relatively quiet location and band. I also think my Jazz bass is shielded pretty well (lights and such usually don't effect it that badly).

That being said I started experimenting with the ZNR and it completely removes the hum. Personally, I can't detect any tone suck at all. I have an always on compressor, and a bunch of effects and no matter what I enable, disable, everything sounds the same to my ears.

Others might detect a difference that I don't but curious if anyone else has played with this at all. There are a lot of posts with other bassists eager to get rid of single coil hum but still wanting to retain the single coil sound so I figured I'd would share this experience. I know noise gates get a bad rap - but for me personally this really solves the problem.

FWIW, Zoom's ZNR isn't really noise reduction, it's just a noise gate, but it is a good one. As a digital noise gate, no issues with tone-- just have to be mindful of how the gate closes with long, quiet, sustained notes.

It works best to use the input (GTRIN?) rather than the FX in; because all the unit's FX (distortions & and other gain boosters) are digital, they won't add of their own noise, they'll just amplify what is already there-- so you don't really benefit by triggering post input. The benefit of trigging from the input, is that you won't need to have different thresholds for different fx chains. Once you get the best threshold, you can just set it that way every time.
