Fretless
  1. Y
About a year ago, I sourced some parts for a beautiful fretless bass and had my luthier assemble it.

Here are the specs, starting with the Warmoth neck:

Style: P Bass®
Construction: Super Bass Construction
Scale: 34"
Orientation: Right Handed
Neck Wood: Goncalo Alves
Fingerboard Wood: Goncalo Alves
Quartersawn: Yes
Nut Width: 1-11/16"
Back Shape: Standard
Stiffening Rods: Standard Steel Rods
Fret Size: Lined Fretless
Tuner Ream: BML (17.5mm)
Radius: Straight 10"
Fret #: 21
Mounting Holes: Standard 4 Bolt
Inlays: Cream Face Dots
Side Dots: White Side Dots
String Nut: White Corian - Standard Nut
Additional Info: Quartersawn Goncalo. No Finish Required.

I had chrome Schaller BML tuners installed and the fingerboard professional coated in epoxy and now it looks like glass! I'm not sure what the strings are but they are flatwounds and it's set up perfectly. Chrome Kluson bridge and Fender "F" neckplate.

The body I sourced on Talkbass - it's an alder (I think) MIM Fender P body that was routed for two Jazz pickups. I had Kent Armstrong lipstick pickups installed and they sound awesome! I
also had a wood control plate made for the back of the bass because the original plastic one was cut a bit unevenly. The bass comes with two custom pickguards - one black abalone (cut by my luthier) and the other brown tort (cut by Chandler's Pickguard Heaven.) It is currently wearing the brown tort guard. My luthier also did a beautiful satin finish that I would say is close to "sienna burst" or something similar. The bass is pretty light - I will have to weigh it later but I'm guessing it's under 9 lbs. Comes with a black Gator Transit bag - probably my favorite gig bag on the market. Passive wiring (vol/vol/tone) with your choice of chrome MusicMan knobs or black "Sadowsky style" aluminum knobs.

This is an absolutely incredible fretless, but I'm not much of a fretless player. Plus we're moving soon and I should probably downsize.

Pictures below. I have over $1200 into this bass but would take $995 + actual shipping to you. Lower 48 USA highly preferred for shipping ease and safety. Trades? Unlikely since I'm trying to thin the herd. Anything coming my way would have to have a decent chunk of cash with it. Could maybe use a 4-ohm 1x12 cab... the Warwick Gnome comes to mind. Run anything by me if you wish.

Who manufactured the neck? Is it a defret or was it made that way? I love having the lines and dots. I’ve always wanted a Jaco tribute, but I actually kind of like this one better.

All Warmoth. Specs in my original post, but it was one of their showcase necks. I had my luthier coat the fingerboard and install the tuners.

Decided to throw this one back into the marketplace and see if there's any interest. I have 7 basses and could stand to get rid of 3-4. As much as I wish I played fretless, I barely have enough time to play fretted lately. This is the coolest and best-playing fretless I've ever had so I won't give it away, but make an offer if you're interested.

Better pictures added to the original post by request. I put some chrome knobs from a Musicman bass on but I can switch them back to the black aluminum in the original picture if desired. I've had some interest but she's still here, so make a fair offer if you want an absolutely killer fretless.

I can’t believe this bass didn’t sell… the last few days, it’s been killing me not to buy it just on principle…

I had some almost-bites but ultimately I know I'd just end up building another fretless later... I'm actually thinking about trying to add a preamp to this one since there's plenty of space under the back cover. I suck at fretless but did noodle around on it yesterday for a few hours and it was tons of fun.
