Jimmy Johnson Interviews?

Thanks, I've followed that as well as the Facebook Jimmy Johnson appreciation page for years now but I'm looking for in depth audio and video interviews with Jimmy.

Jimmy with Steve Gadd and Mike Landau is such a great band especially live, as was the trio he had with the recently departed Mike Miller and of course the legendary Holdsworth performances which made such an indelible impression on me.
Maybe post there at the Alembic Club - I bet some of the JJ fanatics will have some leads, if not the man himself!

I kind of kick myself for never catching Allan Holdsworth, he played locally to me plenty of times, I was just out of the loop...

NHL Season 2026-27

I'm going to guess every NHL GM has a dartboard with Danny Briere's picture on it. He singlehandedly upset the financial apple cart by offering a 0.7 ppg player a whopping $18M, which in turn lead to every other player in the category of "pretty good but not quite a superstar" to think they're also entitled to such riches. Fantilli, Gauthier, and a handful of other soon to be RFA/UFAs.

Gauthier turns down $13Mx4. Two months ago he likely would have signed for $11M.

On the other hand, perhaps Ducks GM Verbeek's tactics that backfired will spur on other GMs to not lollygag when it comes to their RFAs.

Lightning Boy Audio Thread

So the "pedal" finally arived with the mail today, and I had a chance of testing it out.

I recorded a before the transformer was added audio clip and an after, and what I hear, though as expected subtle, is a somewhat tighter, yet somehow smoother, trancient and tone.

It doesn't sound like the kind you get from regular compression though (I don't like compression post production), it doesn't seem to mess with the overall dynamics or tone the same way a regular compressor would do (in fact it seems to almost do the oposite, exspand, instead of compress, at least as far as regards the tone, if that makes sense).

And while the difference is quite subtle, I do very much like what it does.

I got it located as the very last part of my "amp-less" pedal signal chain, right after my EQ based cab sim, boosting the signal into the 2020S, then into a simple tube preamp/DI, with the input gain adjusted accordingly (if the dB marks on the input gain knob of the preamp is reliable, and I can trust my ears and its input gain meter, then I have the signal into the 2020S boosted about +10dB or so, over unity).

Here the clips are, I tried keeping them at just about the same output level, exactly as recorded directly into my DAW, through my "amp-less" setup, no additional compression or effects added:

No Transformer:

Yes Transformer:

And yes, this is how my basic "clean" tone sounds, on my main instrument, a 28.5" scale tenor bass guitar, in G#1 standard tuning.
No sounded more live, Yes sounded more produced. Nice.

iPad, casual listen.

BTW, I also incorporate the 2020s.
DCX > CAPO > 2020s > HX One > comp/limiter
Lets me apply additional character from the CAPO, and smooths the digital HX.

Gravity Mic Stand Bag Alternative

I know you’re right. I’m just a tight a$$. 😀
I hear you. I feel the same way. But over the years I’ve found that this approach sometimes leads to false economies.

You start by buying something that isn’t exactly what you wanted because you save a little money up front, but find that in the long run it doesn’t work as well as you’d hoped, and end up having to get what you should have sprung for in the first place. This has happened to me too many times, so these days I tend to get the real thing the first time around, and save myself annoyance and expense.

A friend of mine used to run an ad agency, and their slogan was «Get what you want. Pay for it.» It’s actually not bad advice. 😊

This is how everyone works, when they accumulate funds and become giants they start not paying attention to such problems, or is it just a coincidence who you come across in feedback, who is in what mood and how competent they are at their job?
When youre young(company), you put your heart and soul into what you do, when youre older and successful(company), there are other criteria and goals to achieve.

Verdine White’s Old Basses?

Here (at 0:58) is a closeup of the bass in question. The position of the mudbucker is not as close to the neck as in the '70s Telecaster Basses, so you are probably right about the mod.

From the description:

"Record executives want a highly-regarded record producer to focus on a white pop act whom they feel has the sound America wants. To keep his creative integrity, producer Buckmaster carefully begins to fight the system from within."

JOYO / DFX / NUX / MOOER / MOSKY / LEROCK / OTHER - FanClub and brotherhood of Clones

Your jazz bass sound really nice even without Tidal Wave engage.

FINALLY building a pedalboard - 48 years into playing

After you enjoy the Freeze, imagine how it would sound with a send/return loop that includes other effects! (that's the Superego, the deluxe isn't necessary because then you are stuck with the effects it has) I run mine into a Boss SY synth, a Bananana synth, Oceans 11 (the EH) others... the auto setting means your next note is sampled and changes the note from previous so it's like having a bow / sustain.
Will be interesting to explore that now.

Musical Humor for us oldies.

Not musical but:
A Jew, a Hindu, and a politician are staying at a hotel in a park. As each is alone, they naturally begin talking and decide that rather than hang around by themselves they'll all go hiking together. While hiking they get thoroughly lost, but eventually, hours after dark, they stagger out of the woods and find themselves near a small farmhouse with a light on. Running to the farmhouse they knock on the door and explain their predicament, asking the farmer if they can sleep there tonight and in the morning pay him to drive them back to their hotel. The farmer agrees but says "I have a spare room with two bunk beds, but it's tiny so one of you will have to sleep in the barn. But don't worry, it's cozy and there's plenty of soft hay." The three men look at each other and the Hindu volunteers to sleep in the barn. The Jew and the politician lay down on their narrow bunks and try to sleep, but a couple minutes later there's a knock on the door. The Jew gets up and opens the door and there stands the Hindu. "I am so sorry, my friends, but I cannot sleep in the barn. There is a cow in the barn. According to my religion cows are holy and I cannot sleep in the same building as a cow.". The Jew shrugs and says " My friend, take my bed. I have no religious objection to sleeping in the same room as a cow." The Hindu thanks him profusely and settles down to sleep, but after a couple minutes there is a knock at the door. The politician gets up and opens the door. There stands the Jew who says "I am sorry my friends but I cannot sleep in the barn. There is a cow in the barn but also a pig. In my religion, pigs are unclean and I cannot stay in the same building as a pig." The politician says "Fine, take my bed. I will sleep in the barn." The Jew lays down and they try to sleep, but after a couple minutes there is a knock on the door. The Hindu climbs out of bed and opens the door, and there stands a cow and a pig.

The stage has fallen silent: RIP JRA

If it hasn’t been mentioned, here’s a song Jim co-wrote and sang back in the day. He thought it was funny that I found it. What a cool dude.

Sort of sounds like the B side of an Animals record no one knows of. Or Moby Grape or something on a Ktel albums of 40 Original Happening hits.
Only 2.99 for the album. 3.99 for the tape.

G&L truss rod repair...yep they're junk.

I bought a used G&L LB-100 in 2020 that was made in 2014. The trussrod nut broke off after one adjustment just like yours. I contacted them and they made me a new neck for free, even though I wasn't the original owner. I'd say that was them acknowledging (without saying explicitly) they knew the truss rods were subpar. Still, they treated me great and new neck is fantastic, quatersawn flamed maple just like the original. RIP G&L

Does any one know the tone difference in how the Genz Benz Neo X212 compared to the new Genzler cabs or even the Subway cabs beside the weight

The Subway line is where the NeoX and Uber might have evolved if Genz Benz was acquired by Mesa rather than Fender. Then again, Genzler also has their interpretation of the future with the Bass Array and MG cabs

I propose that we put the poor OP out of his misery and insert the recent thread on
‘which is your favorite slap bass?’ Ok, so here it is. Let’s cut the b.s. and give the OP what he really wants to know.
As I mentioned, the OP bought two jazz basses recently, and I suppose now he wants a 5 string? I think he’s being rather coy. 😂😂😂😂😂

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/which-bass-that-you-own-has-your-favorite-slap-bass-sound.1663858/

BTW, the Chinese pro on WeChat, Pink.bass slaps the crap out of her Roscoe and Lakland 5 strings as good as anyone.

Bassists who ride Motorcycles

I’ve had a couple, but the last bike I REALLY liked was my first generation Yamaha FZ1. It was the perfect machine for me after I a few alterations. I could do credible track days, riding to the track or tour…anywhere. Cross country. Plus it was built with ease of maintence in mind, which is super important.

So, the first to catch my eye without (so far) reservation is the Yamaha TC-9. Anyone have experience with that model?
