I tried learning "Day Tripper"; this is what it came out like.

How's it going folks, some time ago there was discussion on this thread about contrabass balalaikas falling under a broad ABG label. I came across this group called Russian Renaissance on YouTube, balalaikas and an accordion, with a contrabass balalaika for the full group. Superb musicianship and great to see an ABG-adjacent instrument being used.

When I get it all put together and figure out if the bass cut is worth it I'll post a cleaned up diagram, but it's pretty much WYSIWYG the wire bridging between the pickup sides goes to the commons on the switch and if the jumper (blue) touches a terminal it gets soldered.

I feel like it's not too late for everyone involved to have a good outcome, but it would take quite the mediator.

I've not tried the Pultec trick before, never having had a piece of gear to do it with, but it occurs to me between the HPF, Lo, Bass, and Range controls, there are many ways to sculpt the low end. How are you all running your EQ?

I got a set of these in a 5-string split P configuration as a proof of concept to test on my J bass. I agree with the general consensus in that they are perfectly okay. Not terrible, but also not something to write home about. I would say they are better than something you'd find in a low-end squier, about on-par with higher end squiers and lower end fenders. It didn't have any weird hum or gremlins, tone is very warm and favors the low end which is about what I expected for ceramic. I found the high end to be really lacking, but that might just be how I have it set up and I'm still experimenting with them a bit.

QC left a lot to be desired though. Wires were soldered on by a wish and prayer and snapped off almost immediately after taking it out of the box. I think I got someone's return because most of the contents were loose and the box was taped together with painter's tape. Not a huge deal if you know how to solder, but just something to keep in mind.

For the price, I really don't think they're all that terrible. I think these are great pickups if you like to experiment with custom wiring, pickup swaps, build a lot of basses, stuff like that. I wouldn't really consider them an upgrade over most cheaper stock pickups, more of a side-grade if anything. Wilkinson's guitar pickups are really great for the price, but their bass pickups seem to be merely fine.

Strangely enough, I also had an offset in magnet size between the B/E pickup and the A/D/G pickup, the former was larger than the latter, but not quite as dramatically as your J. Regardless, I have to agree that I think its probably intentional considering how much beefier it made my B & E strings.

In case anyone is still here, the Beringer, Sustain pedal didn't really work very well, for me, as far as endless Sustain.
If anything it acts like a way to change my passive bass into an active/boosted bass. That's why I'm not sending it back.
I've got a Dunlop/Tom Schullz(Boston) Rockman, headphone amp. This comes close, but it's not a pedal. It's a whole 'nothing story why he marketed/sold them as a headphone amp.

Neck stripped off of logo, (yellow) lacquer, sanded, pad sanded to 10K grit.

Well I’ve been chatting with Pete a lot and he has given me a lot of information so it’s as close as I could get it.

Only real differences are I used Sitka spruce (laminated) for the top instead of poplar and did an access door and bolt on neck to prototype some setup things. I also did a little Kubicki style low D extension.

That book is not a foundational method, it is more a supplement for what is already out there. You should get a teacher and use whatever method they use - Rufus uses Rabbath. Simandl is still the most reliable method, especially if you understand that method books are to get you started and not an end point. Get a copy of Simandl New Method for the double bass book one and work through at least the first half with the bow, preferably with a teacher.

I'm glad you were able to make it work. It pretty much always just makes me want to stop playing and give the solo to the pianist. Fortunately it has happened lately.

I'm not a big slapper but my Jazz with Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Pickups has the best slap tone. In fact, I probably slap more than I should when I play it so I have to be careful.

This topic wouldn't belong in the LC, but it's not even being discussed in a way that is worth moving to another forum. I'm going to lock it down, and invite the OP to re-start it in the Basses forum (or whichever forum is closer to his intentions on where they wanted this to go).

It's a Peavey Millennium Plus from around 2000. I replaced the stock pickups and preamp wanting Lakland tones (OG 55-02 Bartolini's, not the newer Lakland pups) with Peavey ergonomics (smaller body, thinner neck, smaller fretwire) and it's turned out to be a really great bass!

strange timing... because im literally waiting for a switch to arrive in the post and I need to get a diagram so I can get someone to wire it up for me in the rather near future as it goes
hopefully making this comment will keep me in the loop in case anyone does post any relevant stuff
I will endevour to find out what the switch ive got is pin wise its an 11 position if that helps

Thanks for all the replies, everybody. I'm several floors up in my new building, but thankfully there's an elevator. I really don't mind a little weight, the main thing is that I want to get everything inside in one trip, because it's a long walk through the lot, a ways down the hall, and a long wait for the elevator, and then to do it all several times after a long gig and a long drive sounds... tiring. So I'll definitely have a dolly or cart, the trick is now to figure out how to make everything fit.

I've had my Kinetix a couple of months now and and it has performed like a champ on multiple gigs. I feel the MG800 is just another flavor of greatness and wouldn't even say one is better than the other. I feel like the Kinetix fits best with my country band, but I could go either way with my R&B/funk group on amp choice. The country band does way more shows though and as much as I would like to be a multiple amp guy I just sold the MG800 to build the funds for the next gear purchase.
