External Master Volume for Ampeg V4B?!

Hi everyone,

if there's one thing I always missed about the Ampeg V4B, it's a master volume. Last night I was looking through ebay and stumbled over this: Baja Tech Custom - Maximum Tone, Minimum Space - I instantly bought it for a very low price, hoping for my dream to be fullfilled
Has anyone tried it before? Is it any good? I couldn't find any information on here, but somebody must have heard of this or tried it?

For years (decades actually) I've heard that a potentiometer could be plugged into the Ext Out jack and used as a master volume control. I've never tried it but this is exactly what the pedal you linked to is doing.

Finally I was able to test it today, only on low volumes, but it's working nevertheless! So it seems to do what I wanted, which is great.The only thing I'm missing is a light indicator to tell me if it's turned on. I will test it in the rehearsal space later this week but I have no doubt it will work at high volumes too.

I got mine and got my V-4 back today. Just tried out this Master Volume. Works just as advertised.

The funny thing is that when I crank up my Channel volume a whole bunch and then use the Master to keep the actual output down, to me, it doesn't make a HUGE difference. I mean, I guess the distortion coming from the preamp just isn't as dramatic as I was expecting.

And using that much attenuation from the Master Volume pedal definitely has a noticeable effect on the tone. Overall, it's a cool widget. But, if I had had a chance to really try one before buying it, I'm not sure I would have plunked out the cash. Doesn't matter now...

I'm using one of these with a V4b. Yep works as advertised. I like to use the switch as a boost. I'm with Stu on the distortion. I think it's a combo of preamp slamming the power amp but the pedal does get some distortion at lower volumes. I don't see much of a noticeable effect on tone unless it's way way down at or below late night practice volumes but I find the amp itself really doesn't open up feeling like a good old tube amp unless it's up at least a 1/4 way up without the pedal so to me it doesn't really matter I have other amps for home practice and it's not that noticeable anyways. I've been real happy with it overall. I like the finish on it too.

you could solder a treble bleed cap across the pot's terminals to preserve the treble when the MV control is turned down.
