Well fellow TBer's it is time..I'm putting dwon my bass and trading it for a bass..the fish that is :p

Since my originals band quit playing back in the early spring music and bass playing has just not been as fun for me. I still love playing and making music but the grind of gigs, people and issues just is getting old...quick.

I am telling the BL in the country /oldies band I'm in that I will play till early spring then Bassbully is goin fishin!

Fishing and music has been my two loves since I was a kid but to be truthful I'm better at catching bass than playin bass ;)

In my band we do mostly covers and a few originals, same songs, setlist, same drama at all the gigs ..same crowds too.
I just don't have the disire to continue and always knew I would go back to fishing but to do it would have to lay the music down to juggle my free time. It is time.

I have a boat in my sights I hope to get this week :hyper:

I was a semi- professional touring Bass angler from the late 70's to mid 90's when I walked away. I'm going to be 52 in the winter (God willing ) and have suffered allot of personal issues with death and illnesses with loved one's in the past couple of years.

My biggest loss was my Dad almost two years ago who rasied me with a fishing rod in my hand. When I'm on the water I feel him there with me..I'm at peace.

So I will hang around here a little but my focus is on getting ready for the fall fishing in my area. I put 90% of my bass gear on local CL and if its cool here you can PM me if you are interested in any of it.
I am keeping my parts P bass and Markbass rig till spring then selling it.

I have been on a stage pretty much once a month for almost 11 years. It's time to fade away...the Bass not bass,, are calling.

Enjoy the fishing! But consider keeping at least one of the non-slimy types of bass around. You don't have to be in the live-performing grind to keep your hands in the music, and someday, you might regret having dropped the axe completely.

Best of luck to you; you'll always have friends here in the deep end, should you return.

Thanks Man. I will sell all my basses off thou. I doubt I will go back..never know.
To tell you the truth 95% of my home playing time is with my acoustic guitars. I only pick up my basses when I practice or play a gig. I will always have an acoustic for sure.

I once was all excited because I was a BL fronting a corporate band on it's way to playing at James Brown amphitheater in Augusta GA. The gig went so horribly wrong-and all the drama disgusted me so bad- that when I got home I closeted all my gear and didn't play a note for five years.
Life went through some changes again and now I'm plenty busy as a bass player...much more than ever before.
The stage will be there when your sabbatical is over.

I understand where you are coming from , I did the fade when I was 50 .....turned it back on a few years later.Maybe you just need a change and not a fade .......see post #7 http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f67/official-covers-vs-originals-thread-940590/

All the best to you

I see what you are saying but even writing and recording my own songs just does not thrill me anymore. Just like when I quit bass fishing in the 90's when I'm done I'm done.

It's been fun. One thing about me is I'm very dedicated in what I do. Music has always PO'ed me since day one because I have to rely on other people allot..... I hate that part of it. Dedication has never been an issue.. my desire is gone.
I like just having to rely on myself...I just work allot better that way.

I get it. I was that way once upon a time with motorcycles. At 8 I had my first ride on one, was hooked. Bought every bike mag I could when I was a young teen. Got my first bike when I was able to pay for it. Many years, and probably eight or nine bikes later, I just lost the urge. Never thought it would happen. 30 years of obsession with them, then two years ago I sold my last one. As it stands now, couldn't care less if I never swung a leg over one again.

It could all change, though.

Life's funny. It has been coming for the last year or so. I told my wife i would go back to fishing when I retire but thats like 10 more years. After losing my Dad and others in my family I said ..why wait? Music has been a blast but like I said it is not fun no more and in allot of way's a PITA at this point in my life.

I can climb in my boat ..fire up the outboard... tear across the lake and forget life for awhile..that is what I miss.

That smell of a dewy morning out on a lake...they should bottle that smell :D
