I think I'd like one of the new M series basses.
Now that that's a Tribute line, I could even "try an M2500 cost effectively"....

Are there sound clips of these anywhere?

I don't own an L2X00 anymore; they're just too wooly for me, having turned into a nearly full time active Jazz guy (Sadowsky, Nord/Alleva).
It would seem with the new pickups, and three band eq, I could cut some mids, and perhaps boost treb/bass a bit, and get into J-bass sonic territory...maybe?

I don't see Tribute M2500's f/s anywhere yet.

I don't own an M, but I did own an L. Did you ever consider the single/series/parallel mod? When wiring up the switch for single-coil operation, you can choose either inside coils from each pickup (Music Man-ish) or outside coils (roughly 70's Jazz spacing). I chose inside, and ended up using it about 25% of the time. If I'd gone outside, I probably would've used it even more...

hey chef. I went up to meet Greg at rocket music when I picked up my passive lull jazz. having always been a g&l fan I asked to play the m2000 he had in stock. great bass but very strong and very g&l like. the flat voice reminded me of the l2000 in parallel mode with active treble boost engaged. you could adjust to warm it up and tone down the sizzle but the g&l guts in the tone was always there.

I have a USA M-2500, I was considering waiting for the Tributes but got a great deal on mine and couldn't pass it up. I've generally felt that taming a naturally aggressive bass sounds better than angering up a naturally calm bass and the M-2500 is clearly the former. Sweet EQ with an acre of headroom, they nailed it with these and I suspect that the Tributes are also going to be nasty.

I'm with J.K. a few posts up, it's basic everything-flat sound seems to be pretty close to the parallel / treble boost deal on an L-2XX but with some additional taters. Fiddling with the EQ and blending slightly to the bridge may get you in the vicinity of a hot Jazz but the extra basic girth is always there. I've definitely never been able to fool anyone (besides perhaps dancing drunk people) into thinking that my M-2500 is a Jazz though...

What would work for an active J bass lover who also likes the G&L L2xxx series pickups would be to have each pickup with their own series/outer single/parallel switch (which you have, I believe) and to install an Audere Classic 4-Band preamp. The Audere doesn't so much tame the pickups as it clarifies them and gives you great control over the sound. It's easy to dial in a smooth, deep, Jazz bass type tone.

Sounds like parallel with treble boost on an L2000? :confused: Thats about as aggressive as the L2000 gets. I thought the M series was supposed to bring it down a notch with the underwound pickups.
