G&L M2X000...Users? Soundclips?

I was really hoping to hear something like
"roll back the active mids, boost bass and treble a touch, and it's kinda like a big, bad, clean clear big J bass."

not so much though huh....dang.

Chef,

I *finally* got to play one today. First off, I'm BLOWN AWAY at how clean and clear and BIG it sounded. The B-string was every bit as good as any bass I've ever played - including the Roscoe I also played today. The EQ is tremendously useful, and I was able to get some excellent tones out of it, while it still remained "G&L". The top end was much clearer/cleaner, the bottom was just as big, but more clear, and the mids were present, but not overly so. I bet that if there was a parallel option, these would sound even more in the Smith category.

Unfortunately, I never really got "Jazz Bass" out of it. I'd be curious to see if a coil tap would get you closer than it did with the original MFD pickups. These are already inherently cleaner and more airy and extended up top; perhaps going to single coil wiring would finally get that "Jazz bass on super-steroids" sound.

My only real gripe was the narrow spacing. It works perfectly fine on my fretless L2500, but I'm used to the wider spacing of my Fender J5 on the fretted. Overall, I love the new M2x00 electronics; it's exactly what I was looking for and never could get with my L2500s. I sold off my fretted L2500, but still have the fretless. After this, I might be inclined to either get a fretless M2500, or put the M2500 electronics into it.

these are the things that would draw me in.

humbucker fat, theoretically, could be dialed out with the boost/cut eq, mids too.

I wish there were a dealer that had one is stock anywhere near me, but, there's not.

All my former G&L L2X00 were just "too raw, unrefined, mid-present." Humbucker limited treble, what was there didn't meet my preferences anymore; cutting bass didn't make them pop any more than they already did.

The M series would have to have a cleaner, clearer, more J like treble to work for me....

I didn't feel that the M2500 was wooly. The mids were subjectively less forward than the L2500, and the top was significantly more open, IMO. The natural sound was more reminiscent of my fretted L2500 in single coil mode, but still more clean on the top. With some treble boost and mid cut, it did get pretty modern. I still wouldn't say "Jazz Bass", but more like "EMG".

I'm waiting for my new M2500. Had it modified, with a 3-way switch for each pickup, giving me the choice of serie, parallell og single coil (outer coils).
Got an L2000 from before. Will let you know how they compare...

According to http://www.supersoundmusic.com/ , G&L said they would do it. But the bass arrived to the store without it being done. So the store's tech did it. Considered a switch for coil selection in single coil modus, but the cavity was very cramped and full.
Other than that, it has a quartersawn neck, and a swamp ash body. Don't understand why they use basswood as standard.....

Yes, it's great! Knew I had to have it when I first heard about them. But there where no reviews, no nothing. Then Bass Player had a review, witch was not so good (the bass was good, but the review failed in several ways). So I sold my L2500 tribby and some other stuff, and ordered this one.
A friend sent me to Supersound music, witch had great prices and service. Highly recommended! Just call and ask for Brian, or send him an email. Hoping for the bass to arrive sometime next week. Will let you know how it turns out. Maybe it will push my Alembic Europa 5 into retirement....

Because they found that many people were confused or intimidated by all the switches. This is probably why the "K" switching is NOT openly on-menu.

Remember that the online community (BbL, TB, BABP, et al) only represents a fraction of the G&L L and M Series owners, so there's a lot more going on in the G&L owners world than we realize because we simply don't see it.

One of the driving reasons for the M Series was a desire to simplify the controls yet retain the great flexibility that the L Series is known for. So we get three band active EQ (+/- about 14db), a blend control that isn't a tone suck, and an extraordinarily transparent preamp.

BTW - the question came up of whether or not the preamp adds gain to the signal. The preamp itself does not add gain. Its primary function is to act as an impedance reducer to limit the effect that long cable runs might have on tone. (same as the L Series preamp) Any actual gain (or cut) comes from the three EQ circuits.
