G&L M2X000...Users? Soundclips?

... but it's a particular color I've just had too many of (Tobacco or Sunburst - I forget). If it was just about any other color, I'd seriously consider it. Shallow, I know, but enough is enough.

Letting my ASAT bass go was the craziest thing I did last year:

• M-series electronics on ASAT bass, maybe.
• 5-string ASAT bass, hard to believe, though these were scarcely produced at a time (see old TB post below) and here : [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

Maybe a M2500 hollow body instead ?

I just tried to order a custom 5-string ASAT Bass. The dealer called his G&L rep and was told they aren't making them anymore because they are ridiculously neck-heavy. F.Y.I.

Neck dive would be even worse with an ASAT 5 hollow-body.

Is that binding around the body? Looks like I see some grain.

Truthfully, I'm unsure if that's a wood insert, or, unstained part of the body, but, yes, it's wood. I think.
At least, it was on my '97.

Actually that may be the most perceptive, detailed comparison I've encountered yet. Definitely has helped me get a more precise bead on how these two models actually sound.

In my on going search for the right V I had considered an M2500. They look very cool especially in the Iceburst and seem very reasonable at around $1400. Unfortunately, no where in Bay Area to check one out for some reason. Weight also a big issue for me. Trying to keep all basses at 9lbs or less. The G&L L 2500 and tributes I've played have been pretty heavy. I ended up going the Stringray 5 route (found a light one) at least for now and happy so far. Wonder how they would compare.

I have now made a quick recording of my M2500, trying to display the different sounds you could get out of it with these switches. Bear in mind that this is recorded on the kitchen table while serving supper to my 2-year old... Strings haven't been changed since I got the bass. Besides all this, I think this should give you an idea about how these switches work.

Does anyone know when they changed the serial number CLFxxxxx on M2X00 US models from directly engraved in the wood at the back of the HS to a screwed tin plate (or maybe it was the other way round)?

Is there still the dark dot on US models under that tin S/N plate? (seen under the E key below)

(UPDATE: I know understand this dot is a hole drilled to facilitate the G&L manufacturing process and filled with some red wood. So, it should still be there under the S/N plate...)

My first G&L is this M2500 Tribute which I plan to add a third MFD pickup to (just because I love triples). The two neck pickups will be on a simple on/on/on switch.

I have read/heard that the L2X00 uses a partial coil tap using a capacitor which results in a semi-single coil tone. I was planning to do the same thing on my triple M2500 using a single 4 pole switch.

The series connection from each pickup would each go to one pole of the switch and then when activated would go through a capacitor to ground. I've done this on other guitars and basses and think its a good compromise.

I'm thinking that will be a less invasive modification (says the guy adding a pickup) and will be in keeping with the G&L tone/wiring tradition.
