Filling Bass lines for power trios

just recently our band has lost our rhythm guitarist

since ive played bass, its always been a 4 peice band, were the bass doesnt have to play as the full time rythm keeper.

so im not used to playing/making up basslines that really fill in the song while a solo or lead guitar part is playing.


any ideas on a good "filler" style of playing

If you don'y already know it, learn theory. This will open the doors for you to be able to put more complex lines together over the chord changes.

Listen to a wide varity of musical styles so that you can get an idea of various types of grooves as well. This should hopefully broaden your horizons by giving you some ideas of what else you might be able to play over the changes.


And last but not least, play the rhythm the other guitar was doing if/when the current guitar player goes to do a guitar solo in the song. This should keep the song moving and keep it fairly full.
