New Neck for P-bass

I finally have the tonal set up I want with the pickups and pre on my MIA Standard P-bass, but am more accustomed to Jazz necks. I would like to replace the neck, but am on the fence about three options I am looking at and would like some opinioins.

1.) Warmoth High Grade Birdseye neck and board with Graphite Stiffening Rods
2.) Birdseye neck and ebony board with Steel Stiffening Rods
3.) Fender MIA Standard Jazz Neck

That's the thing I am on the fence about. Most of my basses are black and maple, accept for two with CF necks. I will be adding black Hipshot tuners.

I'm very fond of both myself, so I can't help you. I've got a black/ebony fretless P, and a black & maple G&L.

An ebony board will affect the sound of your bass, as will graphite stiffening rods.

There's nothing wrong with either one of those things, but if you like the sound of your bass as it is - and you say you do - a standard Fender neck will be the closest thing to what you have now.

I have a Warmoth birdseye Maple/Ebony unlined fretless neck on one of my basses and I would not trade it for the world. The thing is rock-solid, never needs adjusting, and the feel of the ebony is amazing. You can't go wrong with that pick.

I am aware that the ebony may be a little brighter and that is fine with me.

i would go for a status graphite neck, they are about £300 but well worth it. they also offer wood style finish phenolic boards too so you can get the maple look.

Go Fender!!! I just put a Am. Std. P neck on my '08 Am. Std. Jazz because I prefer Precision necks. Everything bolted right up and used my same strings(Chromes), barely even needed to re-set the intonation!

I put a Warmoth birdseye neck on my MIJ P bass (in my avatar) and I never have missed the Fender neck. I've had several. I need to adjust the Warmoth less than half as often as the Fender necks.

Been thinking about going the Fender route, but I have yet to track down a 2010+ MIA Standard Jazz Neck in Maple. Anyone want to swap for a 2010 Maple MIA Precision Neck? PM me if you do.

Otherwise, I think I'm leaning towards the Birdseye/Ebony choice, but then again...

And already thought about the Status, but not buying oversees with the exchange rate of the dollar these days.

I would look at Modulus necks too. But I voted maple/maple.

Thanks, I have a couple of Modulus basses and love the necks, but want wood on this one. Also, a little wary of the Moses necks, I don't have an opinion either way, but I've heard equally good and bad things about them over the years and don't feel like taking a 50/50 chance.

Well replacing the neck is a shot in the dark , no one can tell you what you would like.

If you like everything about the P neck but the width , then I would try to trade that P neck for a jazz neck of the same time frame , it looks like a 2008+ P so try for a 2008+ J neck , and frankly all thatblack with maple is sexy , a ebony board would look to drab, its very ying yang right now.

My Warmoth neck is super stable, comfortable, well dressed, and very pretty.
They seem to have a knack for picking out the nicest birdseye maple for necks.
The only thing I'd suggest is making sure the side dot markers will be visible in low light (if you use them...). Mine go bye-bye in certain light. The Warmoth mother-of-pearl side dots are small on my neck.

There you go again teasing me with that PJ! I hear you though, especially thinking about putting SS2360 wire on a Warmoth Neck.

It's a 2010 and I agree with you on the maple and black, but the other thing besides width I am considering is going with the slim taper neck profile to get closer to the feel of my Lakland.

Good to know. Of the two necks I'm looking at on the Warmoth site, one has MOP (ebony) and the other is abalone (birdseye). Lack of side dot visibility is not an issue as this bass is not leaving the house.
