Views on TBC basses!

Being in the UK i have never really heard of TBC basses, an amaerican band were playing up in london the other day and the bassist was using a TBC, the tone was amazing. I believe he was using the AP400-MJ.

I asked him about it and its price, he said he got it for around $400 which sounds brilliant being like £250 over here, plus postage from US to here.

However im interested, for such a low price is the quality any good, they look like they should be worth like a grand each but whats the playability like? how are the pick ups?

Im interested in the MJ version, the JJ version and the SS version. please have a look on their website if you wants to see the pecs etc.

So what is the general opinion on these?

Theres a lot of info here on TB and Harmony Central if you will search...I happen to have 4 TBC's..and I love them...they are not without there problems though (hum, scratchy pots)...but once they are shielded they sound fantastic. The more you read up on them, the more you will find out about problems others have had with them... for me, their weight, price, and the necks on them outweigh the small problems. Here's a pic of mine

I've considered buying one a few years ago. From what I read here on talk bass they are great instruments. Like mentioned above their weak point is the electronics. Again this is not from experience just from what I have read over and over again.

I'd like to have one and put some EMGs in it.

Ok the Look of the M version and the JJ version are defo the best lookers, done some research apparently their M versions are very good quality with sound similar to that of a musicman stingray etc. I currently have a fender MIM Jazz so i think the M version or the MJ version would be the next thing to incorporate into my gear. What you guys think?

A music store in my area has a 4 string HH model that they are asking $999 for. I'm pretty sure it's one of the older chinese models not the new ones that are now being made in Missouri. It looked well built but the tone was kind of nasaly (IMO) I didn't have the heart to tell them they sell new USA ones for $399 everyday on ebay.

i have a AP-400M, sounds amazing when i have a handwound Kent Armstrong MM pickup in it(not korean made sold by WDmusic). Best slap tone i've ever heard. Neck is thin, plays fast and fretwork is great. althoug i am quite happy with the sound now but i still planning to upgrade the preamp with kent armstrong also. This bass killlllls.
the only problem i met is the finish...it cracks on head maybe caused by the climate here. I am in China. Jack is a very nice guy.
