Why do people mess up good basses?

Yes, we get it, your a "artist". But why did you have to mess up that MM with a black sharpie drawing your cartoons on it. Really, You should be shot. :mad:

Sorry about the rant. Just saw a guy in my local store with this and I wanted to beat him with my bass just to prove a point.
I have never understood why people do this and I never will.

its a piece of wood with some electronics and metal. If someone decided to paint their wood Brown and draw black marker poop on it that is their business. They paid the money and they can do what they want with it IMO.

Sure i'm not much for paining MM's either but who am I to judge. Maybe his brother who just died of cancer drew it for him.. Not so stupid anymore is it?

Never thought of that. I want one bad and I think they can be the most beautiful basses around and to see that one just eerked me for some reason.

I saw something a while back where someone had taken a Carl Thompson bass and modified it into some sort of H. R. Gieger-esque horror. That was heart-breaking.

Because he wanted to? No other reason needed as far as i'm concerned. I could say the same about people who spend thousands on custom builds that i think are stupidly ugly, but it makes them happy so who am i to judge? I stuck gold shiny stickers of koi fish all over my jazz because i like them, what does it matter if others don't?

I wonder how many said comments to this effect when Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton painted up their guitars with all of that psychedellic crap in the early "Cream" years?

And I wonder how much that painted up Fender VI or Gibson SG would go for if it were offered up on the auction block today???

I also remember back in the 1970s when it was the cool thing to replace the stock humbuckers in your LP Custom with those new "DiMarzio Super Distortion" pickups! Nowadays it is a great way to reduce the value of your guitar by around $2,000 or so!

And how about all those vintage Fender Stratocasters and Gibson Les Pauls that Peter Townsend smashed over the years? How much do one of Townsend's "Smashed Strats" fetch these days?

And the Stratocaster that Jimi torched at the Monterrey Festival (that Dweezil Zappa purportedly owns and put on the auction block but didn't sell because the $1 Million reserve was not met - got up to around $800K or so)!
