I tried the Bassdrive and it didn't do anything at all for me. Sounded totally weak.

i bought one a week or so ago. it ROCKS.
besides all the great features everyone knows about (order switch, two pedals in one, extensive EQ options....), this thing kicks butt in the tone category (for some- it obviously won't please everybody. what piece of gear does?). on the one side, you get a nice, FAT, warm boost with available drive for fullness and spice. on the other side, you've got a very versatile high gain distortion/boost (both sides give you up to 25dB of boost). putting the boost first gets you even MORE gain when both sides are activated; putting the distortion first yields your distortion sound, but LOUDER (and fatter, if you so choose).
the whole pedal cranks out oodles of lows, so no worries there. the "highs" control on the "Fat-Boost" side is a treble-cut type of control. the "mids" control on the distortion side is a wah-pedal inductor... which means you get a sweepable and tight notch filter to help you hone in on the frequencies you need to cut through a mix.
i'm still getting to know the little beast, but so far it's amazing.

it gets WAYYYYYYY dirtier than the Bassdrive. the boost section is reminiscent of the Bassdrive, tone-wise... but the distortion side is a new and different animal. crazy, almost fuzz-like distortion (when cranked), and as dirty as a dimed Bassdrive with the gain set low.
the lows abound in the GT500. the main difference between it and the Bassdrive is the character of those lows. i didn't A/B them directly, though. you've just got to try one out to see if you and the GT500's character can get along or not.

the Bassdrive is the beautiful, stately, majestic, large animal that moves with complete confidence and determination with the sun shining brightly on it.
the GT500 is the Tyrannosaurus Rex that appears mysteriously and devours it... in a very loud, nasty, and messy way.

so essentially it has the overdrive spectrum of the bassdrive, but then an added "mega-distortion"?

The tone control of the Fat Boost really lets you dial it in to be very transparent. I had one for a few days and loved it (just not enough to displace my GT2).
