Is it possible to take a short-scale neck. like from a Squier Bronco, for example, and attach it to a P (or J) body to make a short scale P (or J) bass?

Attach Short Scale Neck to P-body?

Yes, but you'll have to move the bridge towards the neck to match the scale, which in effect, "moves" the pickups towards the bridge and alters the sound...
Sure. Just make sure that you measure 15" from the 12th fret to the Bridge Saddles.
That'll give you the 30" scale.

Ya that's true IF it is a 30" scale.
The way to know for sure is to measure from the Nut to the 12th fret. (Measure to the edge of the fret closest to the bridge.) That measurement is exactly half of the scale.
Then with the saddles near the center of their adjustment, measure the half scale from the 12th fret to the saddle of the largest string.
while economically that may be a smarter way to go, it's not nearly as fun as doing your own mod.
In fact why would you even bring up a Rondo in the Luthiers Corner????

First of all, than you all for your replies. I think that both Billy C and Cy Miles have valid points. The closest to luthier owrk I've ever done is to tweak a truss rod on my $105 Sky ABG. So buying an SX would be a good place to start if I wanted to learn more advanced tecniques. In fact, after looking at the site, I found two I'd like to try (fretted and fretless Jazzes).

Where did you get your neck?
I am currently rehabbing an old Jazzmaster copy, and was going to build a 24 inch scale neck for it. A neighbor just moved out and left an SX Vintage Series guitar neck in front of my house.
It measured 12 1/8" to the 12th fret, and fit into the existing neck pocket better then most production guitars. And the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge is 12 1/8th" for a 24 1/4" scale. As if it had been built for the body I had. Is that weird or what?
