What's a modern amp that sounds like a 70's Peavey?

I believe vintage thought you meant "classic 400", not 400 series. If you are talking about the old solid state 400, then not much besides the "newer" Mark series and maybe the firebass. Id love to see this kind of thing in a newer stomp box pedal.

Yeah, but the OP is looking for the sound of the Peavey solid state heads. I've played some of the Mark series heads, and while they are grindy, it's not really a tube grind.

Peavey still makes the best bass amps imo. All the options you have with outlets and such that generally come with upper end electronics, the reliability associated with them..the designs...being able to take a combo amp to a large club gig. All that...

I have a TNT160 that I dearly love...and I'll be in the market for a gently used Combo300/older TNT-Black Widow, in a few months.

How many patends and inventions from Hartley again???

Are you referring to a Mark lll, Mark lV? I've had a Mark Ill for years, one of the best designed bass amps ever. I see them used for one to two hundred bucks, and I understand they are easy to recap. You are not going to find anywhere a two channel bass amp with electronic crossover, variable midrange, effects patching, graphic eq, DDT compressor, and operates at 2 ohms.
Get yours fixed and buy a direct box to run off of the preamp out.

I know this post was in reference to think the OP was talking about the "Classic 400". If that was the amp the OP was using, all of these would be a significant down grade.


To the OP: Check out the Mark VIII XP. Has that Peavey tone, and has a DI out.

I don't think any new amps will really get that old SS Peavey grind, so id take it to a tech. These are pretty simple amps, a knowledgeable tech could probably add a DI out for you. If not, just get a simple DI box. I absolutely love my 400, really all old 70s SS Peaveys.

I dig the old Peavey Fuzz channel, too. It was definitely a solid-state fuzz though, and unmistakably different from Acoustic, Marshall or Ampeg amps of that era. How saturated was your tone? Do you have sound samples? That amp was capable of high-gain crisp fuzz, and slightly overdriven distortion as well. That might help.
