Stoner Doom sound?

Hello.

I am currently playing in a stoner doom band (called morbid florist if anyone is interested.)
And i am looking for effects to go with the style, i am currently playing in C# and i am looking for the following effects.

*A good fuzz pedal.
*Octave Pedal (got to make it deeper!! maybe run 6 through each other and see how that goes)
*Wah

and please name a few if i am missing anything.
(and i do not have a old tube amp, but i am looking for one.)

Get the right amp first! I assume you're looking for Sunn, Ampeg or maybe Mesa in that regard. What bands/bassists are you trying to sound like? Are we talking Kyuss/Monster Magnet/Nebula stoner or Earth/Sunn/St Vitus?

I find that I can get tones a-la Kyuss and QOTSA through my Little Big Muff (for more vintage fuzz tones) and MXR Blowtorch (for the brighter, mid-heavy stuff)... and I'm not using a tube amp (100% GK!).

Bongo's suggestions are excellent as well, if you're looking for something a little more "boutique".

Well I'm working on my Doom/oldschool black metal/ neworleans sludge band right now.

I don't have the tube head down yet but I plan on running either a Sunn 300T or Fender 300 because it can go 2 ohms. I wish I could get my hands on a Matamp or Greenamp or Blackamp.

Rocktron Big Crush comp --> Sandford and Sonny Blue Beard (on it's way) --> Jack Orman Design Mosfet clean boost --> MXR Blue Box.

Right now it will be running into a Yamaha TBP-1 --> Carvin HD 1800 --> two avatar b410 Neo's and 215 traynor.

Just can't wait for a sweet tube amp, I also had the thought of running two Traynor YBA-200's instead of one Fender 300.

We'll see... I've been gear hopping lately.

Rickenbacker -> BIG Muff -> Orange Stack **OR** Sunn O))) Stack!

That's all you'll need. Maybe substitute the P-bass and/or an Ampeg or even Tech 21's stuff works well with this style. That's still one of my favorite styles of music and every bass line I play STILL tends to have a sluggish heaviness to it just because of that (now playing COC/Down-ish Kentucky Fried Metal - check out Bluegrass Records).

PS - My old band got to open for Electric Wizard a few years ago! That was one of the coolest shows ever!

In Bongripper (as the band's name implies the style) I'm using a custom bass tuned to F Bb Eb Ab Db a Mesa 400+ with two 4x10 cabs from Hughes and Kettner (I'd like to add another 4 ohms of speaker since I'm only at 4 and I can go up to 2 ohms) and my effect rig consists of

Morley/Tel Ray Wah Volume
Death By Audio Interstellar Bass Overdriver
EHX nano Small Stone phaser
Pigtronix Echolution delay w/expression pedal for feedback control

I'm looking to add in one more item, probably something weird but I havn't decided yet. However I should note that other than the obvious Stoner/Doom style we do we meld in some post rock elements and spaced out jams where the delay and phasers etc come in the most use.

What he said. I saw a show recently with Dead Meadow - their guitarist/vocal (who was really ill at the time) was not there but the bass player and drummer pulled together a sick stoner jam with a guitarist friend -- I was blown away by the tone of Steve Kille and his Ricky & Orange stack! Very committing price, but if you're after that tone you have nothing to lose. :bassist: :bassist:

He did use some stomp boxes but I couldn't see what he was using. Oh, that had nothing to do with my eyes either :ninja:

I would also add a reverb or a delay to your list there. I know that there's a lot of post processing with reverb on doom metal stuff, and it can be real good to thicken up your wall of sound.

Also, instead of an octaver, try a DOD FX25. It can do a very good dub sound, which would probably work a lot better than an octave splitter. Search for Bongo's FX25 shootout, because there's a lot of different versions to choose from.

I would run the octave first, so it tracks better, especially if you're so downtuned. And NOT the Octave Multiplexer. Then I would do fuzz and wah, so you can hear the wah. Otherwise I'd wager that the wah just gets lost in the fuzz.

Yup, but that doesn't mean it isn't still available. The BF-2 was discontinued years ago...

The Sub-Blaster is the deepest, heaviest, meanest, biggest, and best-tracking octave I've played. Perfect for doom, but you'll need a TON of headroom.

First off, a half stack isnt going to cut it. You need a full stack or more.

Second, a good fuzz. For doom I normally recommend a Russian Muff or a Sanford and Sonny Blue Beard. The LBM didnt work out for me when I tried it with low tunnings but maybe I should give it a second shot.

If you want a wahish kinda effect I would recommend a BassBalls rather than an actual wah.

I dont think an octave pedal will be of much use when you are tuned that low since most wont track that far. If you want big bottom, its going to take a big rig and big strings.

Nothing says Doom like making the crowd feel it so hard that they feel uneasy.
