What I said when I saw the news: "Oh no, no, no.. not Joe Zawinul."
This was an awful way to start the day.
Joe is/was a true giant of music, and his presence on this planet will be missed.

The man was and is a legend. Somewhere in the cosmic funk of the universe there is one hell of a player joining the space jam! 
Wow that's sad news. I'm a huge fan of his work with Miles Davis and Weather Report, and his work is largely responsible for introducing me to a wider range of music. It's pretty cool that he still released music and toured at his age. I will miss him. 
Great musician, I just posted a thread in the basses section and didn't realize this thread already existed. Sorry to any mods that have to move it.
I think his composition with Cannonball Adderly 'Mercy, Mercy Mercy' is what got me into simpler, blues based, less is more, music. What a fantastic tune! Hearing that for the first time was a turning point in my development as a bassist.
