The Nordy Club (part 3)

Going back to the 2008 pricing....

I just re-priced what I want, goes from $2,872 to $3,472 @ 80%, a increase of 21%! That's quite a jump for a year, wish I could get that in my business.

With that said, I am sure it's a quality piece, and looks to be in the same ballpark as a Sad NYC or Lakland USA.

Too bad this increase will take it out of my price range / comfort zone.

I've heard through the grapevine that Carey is doing more and more on these basses every year, where originally he hoped to have more of it farmed out to save money and time, where he was more about finishing things up and perfecting them... like the Lakland Skyline stuff. Don't know if it's true, but if it is, that'd easily explain a significant price jump. It would also explain why he could offer options he didn't before, like the figured tops.

Not sure that this statement makes sense... The tops by themselves justify a price increase. You would not increase prices to offer more services. You offer more and can then charge more.

Look, we all know that as a brand increases in popularity the price goes up. If the Nordy line was not as popular and the demand was not as high as it currently is, there would be no justification at all for a price increase.

I have played a few, particularly one at NAMM that was made for Rufus Philpot and I love these basses. Even at at 20% price increase they are worth it. Carey and crew know what they are doing and they are truly dedicated to putting out a great product.

Now, that being said, mama needs to get paid...

For me, there are three builders of high-end jazz basses. Before anyone gets mad because I didn't mention others THESE are the ones I have played. I'm sure there are others.

The three for me are Sadowsky, Nordy and AC. All are variations of great. All equal in fit, finish and craftsmanship. Just comes down what you like and which flavor you prefer.

Given that, Carey's prices are very competative. These aren't your off the rack Fender Jazz.

I've got my next Nordy on order and I am nothing less than thrilled! Spec's are still subject to a couple option changes. I am trying to decide whether to go Exotic top, or keep it more vintage. I already have a really beautiful trans-coral blue Ash/Birdseye Maple Nordy with pearl blocks and binding. So my thinking is ; I've already got a really pretty bass.

If I go exotic top, I am debating whether I would opt for no pickguard/control plate, or keep the PG and control plate. My preferences lean toward deep, 3-d quilt maple.

I was blown away by scott's Fretless. That bass makes a case for no control plate and pickguard. Wow. It's just stunning.

I welcome everyone's input.

PS: Nordy's are worth every penny. No controversy here. Let's move forward and away from that notion.

I agree! The two I had were great.

It's just that anytime pricing is brought up, many feel the need to say what they think about how things aren't worth it. That usually ends up in an argument and there ya go...

As far as I'm concerned, it's a non-issue! Just had to get it off my chest. :)
