Homemade cabs?

The local vintage music store has a beautiful 2x15 cab that is apparently homemade, and I just played through it today. It was hooked up to a GK 800RB, and played like a dream. I was wondering if i should buy it. The price was an unbelievable $99.

I have heard a rule of thumb that a homemade cab is worth what the drivers & hardware are worth.

If at all possible, could you get the make & model of the drivers, and even an estimate of the dimensions? Does it have a port? With just a bit of info, the peanut gallery could give you a ballpark on whether the design is reasonable.

I just sold a homemade 1x15 cab for 70 bucks -- both buyer and seller were happy with the price.

If it sounded good, yes. Homemade cabs don't get any respect, so they don't command what they're worth. There's no reason for them not to work as well as if not even condsiderably better than factory made. Some items are best left to factories, like cars, aircraft, toasters. That rule doesn't apply to speakers.

Sage wisdom.

Couldn't agree more about homegrown getting no respect. Unfortunately, many home cabs are first efforts that didn't achieve their goals. I learned my lessons the hard way and have a pair of cool-looking, driver-less cabs in my rehearsal space that are perfect for placing mixers and other workspace needs.

If the cab sounds great - it's a great deal. I wouldn't think twice if not looking for great resale.

Um...nah. You should buy something more expensive so you can brag about how much you spent on your cab.

Yah. What the hell was I thinking, implying that you could actually save money, get a good sound and still be the envy of your friends and enemies. Overinvestment should never be undersold as a direct route to artistic success and adulation as a musician. :rolleyes:

My first two cabs are in the process of being turned into shelving for my understair cupboard and internal bracing for my subsequent cabs - waste not, want not! ;)

The band I play in has a ridiculous sound system, and we get hired to do multi-band outdoor things because of it. I'm expected to share my rig, and I like making stuff, so I've made a few cabs for that use. They sound fine to me, but I doubt the audience hears anything other than the pa. That is more than offest by the perverse pleasure I get from watching other bass players look at my rig, trying to figure out why they've never heard of 'Impala' bass cabs before.....
