Its going to be pretty hard to sell such an iconic instrument.

This was mentioned in the other thread about this theft, and frankly I disagree. It's only "iconic" to Mike Watt fans, who make up probably .0000001% of the population of the region in which the bass is likely to be fenced. I know who Mike Watt is, and I understand he's a cool guy and a rocking player, but even as somebody who pays attention to bass stuff and likes bass trivia I would not have known that was his special bass. If I saw it at a pawn shop I would think "man, some kid or junkie really did a number on that bass". If I was a pawn shop owner I would think "what a sorry hunk of junk" and probably not offer more than $10 for it.

Watt is not Prince, he is not Bootsy- almost nobody will have any idea whose bass that is, or care.

Sure, maybe an overseas collector would pay nicely for it, and maybe the thief is intelligent enough to know exactly what they have and who will value it. But I'm betting the thief is a typical meathead and will just unload the stuff locally and get very little for it, and nobody in the entire transaction will think "Oh my God, this is Mike Watt's special bass! I have to call the media right away!"

Edit: FWIW I hope I'm wrong insofar as I really hope the gear all gets recovered intact and returned to Watt and the Stooges. They work hard and it's a shame the tools of their trade were stolen.

how is it possible to steal so much ****ing gear. they must have some serious security issues.....

The area of town this hotel is located in is a very busy area. Especially at that time of day (very beginning of rush hour) The convention center is practically across the street. Lots of truck traffic there and they are also buliding a half dozen hotels and condos on the street. I could see how someone could pull it off if they were "smart" about it.

Wow... Watt's awesome Tele bass was ripped off some years back, and now this. :scowl:
That's almost exactly what I said in a thread on this theft in the Basses forum. Man, this stinks.

PS. Didn't Watt get his Tele back years ago and then never took it out again?
Not as far as I know. He got another bass back that was stolen at the same time, I believe (maybe a 'Bird?).
