So I finally have recorings to post for critique/review/advice. They are rough, from a wireless digital recording device passed down to me digitally from the drummer.

Sounds nice Byron. I like the relaxed feel of your walking. Your solos have some nice stuff too.

Couple thoughts.

You are definitely on the right track with the groove. Like I said I think of groove as a place not a thing. Make sure you get to that place and live there. Even at the expense of the hipness of your note choices. Roots that groove are going to make the music way more happening than extensions and such that are not there. I think the trick to making that groove work is for everything you do so sound very purposeful. Sounds great. Keep it up.

Soloing. You have some really nice ideas. I'd encourage you the experiment with your phrasing a bit. You can make a pretty simple idea sound really cool if you twist it through time. Also you still have to live in the groove place. Even if you are messing with time.

Nice stuff. Keep it up.

Aloha,

OK, Bryon, your solo on Autumn leaves had some nice melodic lines and the outro melody had some nice phrasing.

Although it's cool to play around with the time while your soloing, it is still important to maintain a consistent pulse.

I also listened to "Bags Groove" and the "C Jam Blues"

I would say that your overall time feel is headed in the right direction, however I would like to hear your playing be more forceful and connected.


John Patitucci has a wonderful DVD that is a master class on this stuff. I think it comes from Gage. I own it and would encourage you to get it!

That's really great advice. Your right that any hickup or flub offers such a huge impact to the overall feeling. I certainly notice it when I hear myself do it! I know exactly what you mean.

K, Trey. Gonna have to use the metranome and focus on feeling a pulse while I practice soloing.

It's been great to get a glimpse through the lense of all of your collective experience. This process helps to reaffirm the idealistic voice in my head, the side which is under constant seige from reality.

Well keep it commin if anyone wants to add anything.

I'll live up my end of the deal and work on kickin ass in the shed, that is when my mother in law leaves town:hmm:. (can you tell I'm stoked about not getting to practice today?)
