Sano Tube Amp

I did a search for Sano Amp and got nothing, but maybe my question is a simple one.

I bought an old Sano amp off cl, and it has an inst input, a guitar input, and a "stereophonic" input. It has a 15 and used to have 2 8's in it. I plugged my Foundation 5 in, and kept it at low volume, and was floored how good low B sounded. So now I want to use the extension speaker out to try it through one of my cabs.

I don't know the specs on the amp, but found that there were 2 models with the 15-2x8 speaker configuration. One is 35 watts and one is 65 watts. Assuming mine is 35 watts, should I use my Avatar B210 8 ohm instead of my Avatar B212 4 ohm ? It's a late 50's to mid 60's amp, so was there a standard ohm spec for the ext speaker out in those days ?

I just don't want to hurt the amp or cab. Both cabs are 500 watt.

Wish I could answer your question, but that's pretty sweet, and has an Ampeg tie-in. Sano's boss Stanley Michaels used to work with Ampeg's Everett Hull in development of the first dedicated bass amp, the Michaels-Hull Bassamp, in 1948. Probably should have been called the Michaels Bassamp, since Michaels really designed it. A disagreement led to Michaels leaving and starting Sano. Very nice piece of history, and I know zip about it otherwise ;)

I had it on when I first posted, and I don't want to pull the tubes while they are warm, but perhaps the pics will help. btw, the 8's went here...

They certainly didn't scimp on hardware back in the day. The logo has 11 screws lol

The "splatter" grill is cool. Even has it on the center vent of the back.
Any idea what speaker this is ? Jensen ?

EL34 output pair, nice, should be an honest 35 watts "RMS". Good sized power and output iron (transformers), unused chassis plugs tells me the 65 (more like 70 watt) version would have 4 EL34's. Looks like a two piece chassis? Preamp on top, power amp on the bottom? SWEEEET find!

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I found this site with some info. Slide show of some cool models. (hit replay to see second batch) Mine is on the second slide show.

I don't know if the reverb works yet. The seller said I need a standard two switch f/s. The tremolo works though.

Anyhow, thanks B String. From what you say, mine is the model #300R (stereo) 1-15"speaker + 2 -8' speakers, tremolo & reverb, 35 watts RMS listed on LJM's site. There are schematics there as well. Would mine be the 30wR one ?

edit: Sorry ...here's the JJM link http://www.larryjohnmcnally.com/sano_amps.html

It is an alnico speaker, see if you can find some numbers on it (and be careful pushing bass into it).

Ok, so did they have alnico speakers back then ? Original perhaps ?
I'll take a closer look and see if there are numbers on it.

And, yea, I didn't hit the 15 hard at all with my bass. With the ext out, I won't be doing it again anyway. I just wanted to see how the amp reacted to the low B. I plugged in a Gibson J 150 jumbo w/factory Fishman ribbon under saddle, and it sounds killer as well. I bought a Fender Esquire Scorpion last week off cl just to have any electric around the house. It's a tele style w/ one high output bridge pup, and a single volume knob. Probably the wrong axe for the amp, but I got a nice swampy CCR tone out of it w/the tremolo. Lo-Fi nasty :bassist:

Hi.

Congrats. Sweet find.

separate guitar and instrument inputs... looks like our little guitard secret was outed a long time ago ... (snicker)

Sweet amp!

Thanks. Got it for peanuts. 225. I was actually going to buy one of the Chinese 5W deals to keep around the house for guitar, and right before I left to go buy one for 250, I decided to check cl one more time, and there it was.

Heck, this thing may double as a backup for my GK head.
