I'm going through the Hal Leonard Bass Method Books right now, and I told myself that I would reward myself with a new, higher quality bass, upon completion of all 3. As I'm nearing the end of book 2, I had started shopping around to give myself an idea of what I wanted.
I wanted to see what I could get for ~$1000 CAD and had been going to various stores in town. On Saturday my wife and I went to a new location of a local store that I like just to see what I might be saving up for. I go to the basses and pull a EBMM SR5 in natural ash off the wall, and begin playing it. It was a bit more than I really wanted to spend on a bass, but I was willing to save for it.
My wife, who doesn't know a lot about basses, is looking at what else is on the wall. She says "Oooh, pretty!" I look up and see that she's looking at a L-2500 Tribute. I've been interested in an L-2500 for some time now and mentally made a note to try it next, plus I knew it would be in the ballpark of what I wanted to spend on a bass.
Then, she says "It's $399." I tell her she's mistaken as it's an $800 bass around these parts. She insists, I take a look, and it is indeed marked down to $399. I talk to the sales guy who says that it had just been in stock for a long time, and they priced it to move. It is not used (other than by potential buyers, in store).
I play it for 15 minutes and tell my wife that I might buy this bass now. She says "Go ahead, you like it and it's half price. I wouldn't blame you for getting it now."
I put a bit of money down on Saturday, and paid it off today. Here she is:
I was trying to capture the fact that if the light hits the neck the right way, that half the neck changes colours.
There are a couple of small scratches on the finish, but they're hardly noticeable. It was set up well, with a nice low action, I haven't found any dead spots, and the B-string was loosening the light fixture in my music room.
I am very happy with my new bass.
