R. Daguet's Crestwood basses - GAS attack!

Hello one and all!

I finally had the time to have a good read-through of Roger Daguet's website last night (the French luthier who has just launched his own take on the Darkstar/Bisonic pickup, the Dagstar). There are some beautiful guitars on there; his SGs in particular are very tempting, and they sound incredible in the soundclips - bright and jangly and juicy!

But what really caught my eye was his bass version of the Epiphone Crestwood. This thing looks like the perfect mixture of elegance and rock 'n' roll. Absolutely beautiful, and extremely tempting!!! :hyper:

34" scale, all-mahogany with a set neck,ebony fretboard with block inlays, and two Dagstar pickups to round it all off... WOW!! I want one!

I have been pretty GAS free since I began building my own guitars and basses, but I am seriously tempted by one of these. :) Does anybody here own one (or any of Roger Daguet's basses) or has anybody tried one and can give us their their impressions and thoughts? I'm sure that they are superb - just wanted to share and chat about it, really!

Interesting design. I'd be worried about a lot of neck dive though- a very long mahogany neck and headstock with the strap attachment way down at the 16th fret.

Good point about the neck dive, which would certainly be a possibility with this design (although personally, neck dive is something which has never really worried me. If it really was affecting the playability of this bass, I would be quite happy to attach the strap to the rear of the headstock, or tie it above the nut, folk guitar style).

I love the elegance of the ebony board and the block inlays! It looks so cool alongside the very funky, rock & roll vibe of the body, all finished in white! I might have to start a savings fund for one of these beauties!

Epiphone Crestwood, yes. Meets Fender Performer. Sorry, not much about this that I like.

Why on earth do these style pickups have that enormous chrome bumper around them? To me, it just looks "clunky" and out of place on MOST basses.

Hello, the crestwood bass was made only because I am a great fan of these old epi solid body, I wasn't inspired by the embassy and newport bass but the epiphone crestwood "deluxe" guitar Fred Smith used a few with the MC5 and later become the iconic axe of Radio Birdman. I'm doing now my own "redesigned and improved" version of the bisonic pickup with the characteristics of the original without the useless frame. a bass of mine (the black jaguar "type DR" model) was elected bass of the year in France in 2012. the balance of the crestwood deluxe bass is better than you think because I use lighter (but stiff enough) material for the neck . the size of the head is only due to the sizes of the original crestwood deluxe "guitar". I allways like comments from the other side of the sea . god bless america, you're the best ;-)

I'll just jump in here to say that besides drooling every time I see one of Roger's builds, I am also the proud owner of one of his Dagstars, and they really are a work of art. Really finely made pickup, and more importantly, it sounds incredible. Roger was also great to deal with, if I was in the market for a custom bass, he's exactly who I'd go to.

That's very reassuring to know - I'm sure that I'll be contacting Roger about a custom Crestwood bass as soon as I can afford to! Glad that you are happy with the Dagstar too; I have only heard soundclips so far, but everyone who has bought or played them seems to be delighted with them! :)
