I've played free for a friend's band a couple times, but I definitely won't do it again for free. Only reason I didn't get paid was because the whole band didn't get paid either. It was one of those gigs for exposure (and it did work).

Hey a used 55-01 is also an option. That's what I just went with and it's excellent. Eventually I will replace preamp with an NTMB though. Also, I will admit the volume pot on the 55-01 is a little scratchy sometimes.
