What are some of the great treatises written on the bass?

I don't know about historic italian basses, but my modern italian made my Sergio Scaramelli has wooden hat peg tuners with brass shafts. I don't think they're super common on italian basses, but you can find them out there.

That is one gorgeous looking bass. Wish I could make it out to ISB to see it.

Play what makes you most comfortable and you believe represents your playing best. And definitely consult your teacher. I played Koussevitzky this year for my auditions. It's a simple piece, but it got the job done and got me into my top school. Simple is good.
