Disappointed with rig. Should I go Ampless?

Yeah I’d try an eq pedal or hpf first. $100, works with any rig, amazingly useful. Should be on every tone shapers board.

    I love fender but ...

I want Fender to make a bass that washes my dishes. Give the people what they want.

Tips for Backlining a Mesa Subway D-800

I wouldn't love sharing a nice $1000 amp. Sharing a cheap beater amp and then taking 1 minute to swap in the Mesa is an option. So is labeling the knobs with a "DO NOT GO ABOVE" kind of label. So is running them through a limiter or compressor before the amp.

    The Band Lost A Gig…

Musicians - can't gig with them, can't gig without them.

Strings to tame a Sting Ray ?

When I do this I turn the amp up to compensate. So I'm sending a slightly more mellow tone to the amp but not losing any volume. I tend to have a soft touch but bass volume at 10 has a little too much aggression in the character of the sound at times.

What kind of pickup would you guys recommend for my five string punk rock bass?

This is my thought too. Tried and true. OP is routing anyways so route for an industry standard. Before I did all this work though I would try to raise and lower the current pickups and get volume balance. Foam, springs, whatever. This is by far the simplest solution.

Strings to tame a Sting Ray ?

Try new strings but you'll also have to adjust technique and EQ. I suggest also turning the volume on the bass itself down to 75% or so... great trick for dialing back the "in your face" aspect of your sound regardless of string. La Bella RX are a nice roundwound, more mellow than many but...

Should have started a different thread - "should I have refunded this money?" LOL

    A Very Peculiar Dilemma

Stupid is subjective - you get to decide that. Sure, I have experienced similar things. Musicians are some of the most consistently unreliable people I've ever worked with. Not all of them of course but damn if 90% of them don't live with their heads permanently in the clouds.

Is a natural relic less or more desirable than a factory relic?

I love my relic'ed Telecaster because it's a killer Tele that happens to be relic'ed. I think what your instruments have is called "wear and tear" lol. You can't spin that into something desirable unless you're selling to forums. The only way "wear and tear" is desirable is when it brings the...

    "House" bass

Gifted the bass. He was incredibly stoked. We jammed for a while with him on bass and me switching between guitar and drums. Sounded great. Hope its as bulletproof I want it to be. Here's a list of things I did to the Squier CV P to make it feel nicer and generally solve the problems I've...

Sell my expensive bass for perfectly good cheap basses?

Can you pay off the debt over time? If so, then no don't sell the bass. If not, and the debt will never go away, then sure sell the bass. Using a new financial need as an excuse to curate a new collection of instruments is silly. IMO.

Guitarist gives himself full creative control of band.

This is simple. OP either isn't communicating effectively and/or the rest of the band is okay with the strong direction.

    "House" bass

Yep that's exactly what's happening! My favorite strings and my two favorite gig-worthy mods. It's MY bass on permanent loan, lol Great call! I forgot about the strap part altogether. Duhhhhh. Thanks! I use unscented lotion! Same idea :)
