I've got a practical question here, I rest my forearm on the front and over the side, especially when I'm sitting. Is it smooth or rough? Would it scratch up my forearm after playing for a few hours?

It just depends on the playing situations you'd like to be in.

Popping in for a few face to face lessons with a teacher might be helpful. Definately stick with the chord tones, the Root, 3 and 5 and then add the 7ths. I would suggest going with the diatonic chords, those are the ones naturally occurring in the key. This is their order maj. 7 min7...

Everone's tips above are great as far as the notes are concerned. With jazz, it's best to listen and do some transcribing. Think in terms of phrases rather than chord to chord to chord, that is important too but really focus in on the phrases once you're comfortable with the notes mentioned above.

Try some other progressive music. I was listening to Liquid Tension Experiment and Mahavishnu Orchestra this week. Lots of great bass lines there.

Defiantely keep with trying out the chord tones. You could work out some counter melody lines too with a few of the tunes. Then there is the use of approach notes to the next chord. You could consider the chord of the moment, what works with that and then how those notes can help you connect to...

It's not completely necessary for all playing situations. It depends what type musical situations you want to be in in the future. I introduce all my students to reading, I think a general, basic knowledge is good to have.
