I prefer jazz pickups myself, but that is one of the coolest basses I've seen! It's definitely got the vibe.

What do people think about half-rounds (semi-flats)? Best of both worlds? Or a compromise that does neither well?

That's definitely possible, much like the staggering of poles on Strat pickups were based on a wound 3rd string. (Not sure, but I think flat wound was the norm back then too.)
