Not to my ear. I put a set on my AM J. I was not happy with the sound. It didn't really sound like a J and didn't quite sound like a P. I put rounds back on it.Never heard flats on a Jazz. Are they as good as they are on P?
I am having a hard time deciding what I like more.
Better, in my opinion. I can only recommend you try it. You can solo the neck and get the same thump you would get on a P bass or you can get a warmer bridge sound. The scooped tone you get from having both pickups on is also phenomenal. It's like, 2:18 am and I'm wishing I could play right now. I'm so stoked from rewatching the first two vids I posted below... Damn it! Anyway, enjoy. Eduardo Barbosa is the man.
Jazz bass (fretted)
Jazz bass (fretless)
Jazz bass (scooped); others include P and SR basses.
Two words... Jazz. Bass.
In your dreams. Flats cannot achieve the punch and clarity of rounds. Different tools for different jobs.My P Bass can become bright and punchy with Flatwounds.
It's called a tone knob![]()
Yup--- 2 Squier P5's (one cost $200 the other $150)---- one with flats, one with rounds.I like the flat sound for recording but pretty much need the round sound live. The struggle is real. 2 P basses is the only answer. Fortunately flats sound great on cheap P basses!
Not the same thing:My P Bass can become bright and punchy with Flatwounds.

Meh, your opinion. In your dreams. Flats cannot achieve the punch and clarity of rounds. Different tools for different jobs.
What do people think about half-rounds (semi-flats)? Best of both worlds? Or a compromise that does neither well?
Try the DR sunbeams. They are awesome. The dunlop superbrights are really good too. Im not usings flats anymore.
If you've listened to any classic reggae, you probably have without realizing it. Jazz w/ flats was the weapon of choice for many reggae players in the 70s and 80s.Never heard flats on a Jazz.
Your opinion and mine are identical on this topic.Half-rounds = Only half of what's good about rounds and flats.
Pressurewounds = Best of both worlds.
Just my opinion...![]()
