I have the same head and have used it with my pair of 4 ohm cabs. Works great but the amp still only puts out 500 watts so i don't believe there is any more volume...it just gives you the option of using a pair of 8 or 4 ohm cabs. as far as mixing and matching...as long as you don't go below 2...
