    Flats: Daddario or Rotosound?

Depends. If we're talking about a P-bass I'd go with Rotos, if a J-bass Chromes. The heavy mid emphasis of Chromes just does not work for my ears on a P-bass, but it is pure gold on a J-bass, leaps out wonderfully in a full band mix. I can't speak for a J-bass with Rotos. Only tried that once...

    NAD - Hartke Kilo

Back to Bruce Thomas for a second. He played a P with overwound pickups, and I found that adding a barely perceptible touch of overdrive to the otherwise clean bass sound fattened things up to a point that sounded very very close playing my American Standard P with stock pickups.

    NAD - Hartke Kilo

Hmmm, I'll have to look into other threads and online reviews for info on that. Guess I'm keeping the LH1000 around as backup for a spell. Guess that setup I was talking about may be getting a Procool rack mount fan :D

    NAD - Hartke Kilo

Thanks!! From Bruce himself, who used a BOSS EQ pedal into an Ampeg SVT: "Basically I just take out all the bottom end-150 and 100 [Hz] right out. And that horrible sound around 400-if you boost that frequency it makes things go honky and squawky, so I take that one out. And I whack up 200...

    NAD - Hartke Kilo

Have been a huge Hartke fan from the start in the mid/late 1980s, in fact I still have early models of the 410XL cabinet and 2000 amp which I still use at rehearsals. Had upgraded my performing rig this past year to the newer HD410 and HD115 cabinets driven by the LH1000 amp, which sounded great...

Who is the LAST person you’d want to see at one of your gigs?

Nobody fits that category, I'm very happy to have an audience. That said, things do often go much easier when playing to an audience of complete strangers, who have no prior expectations and have to be won over. Expecting family, friends, workmates, etc. to come to shows, or they expecting me to...

Got called off of my sub gig yesterday (whine/rant) ...

Yes I had that happen and not just with a bar band. Was set to go on a jaunt down to Maryland and Virginia for a few shows with a singer who had recently signed to a label and had a mix of his own songs, plus covers from the same wheelhouse. Learned them all, then got a call that the...

Best flats for a P poll

Out of the list I've only played Roto 77, La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats, Fender, TI Jazz, and Chromes. Chromes on a P did nothing for me--way too zingy and mid-forward. TI Jazz lost the zing but still had too much midrange for my taste, not worth their expense. Bought a bass with Fender flats on...

How do you (personally) fight performance anxiety?

Lots of great replies already but I'll throw in $.02, ya never know what perspective it might bring. Yeah getting in the zone as much as possible is great...being prepared musically and well rested, having gear loaded into the SUV the night before, arriving really early to counter a tendency to...

    J bass vs stingray

A series/parallel switch on my Jazz bass gets me close enough to both worlds. I installed the switch originally because I'd heard the resulting bigger sound of series wiring was supposed to bring the sound more into P territory, but I find that's not quite true. If anything I think the sound is...

Hartke: Why Do Musicians Use It?

Long time Hartke user all the way back to 1988...410XL cab and 2000 head after having used a GK head for a few years. Both have been great, with only one minor mod (noisy fan replacement) and routine maintenance (replaced caps/preamp tube), and using a BOSS multieffects pedal mostly for EQ I've...

    Boss GT-1000

Another thing I noticed is that the noise suppression for bass introduced a lot of digital noise. Not sure why. The preset bass patches, and the patches in the featured bundles available via the BOSS Tone Studio app, seem to be fine. Something about my ordering of effects?

    Boss GT-1000

I did get the GT-1000 for both bass and guitar earlier this year. Took some time but I was able to replicate all the patches from my GT-10B pretty closely and get some nice clean tones. Had to be more sparing on compression and preamp gain than on the GT-10B to achieve that. If you're a fan of...

People who can only play songs (cannot/will not jam or improvise)

I can improvise all right, but man does it get frustrating when one player goes so far off on unstructured tangents that everyone else is reduced to following or putting down their instruments. If it's going to come down to that let's break out some good songs instead! The best improvisational...

Surprisingly very heavy music from non traditionally heavy bands.

Did a song like that on the record my band just released. We're more pop rock or pop punk, but we did one really heavy song whose guitar is in the metal territory, but otherwise still has pop sensibility. Fun to go off the rails every once in a while!
