This is how it was explained to me by the luthier who setup my bass recently when I asked about the purpose of the tube. He called it “the rattler.” :laugh: I ended up taking it off because it wouldn’t stay in place.

My experience was that it took a few months for the 3885’s to “settle down” and lose their initial zing. Lots of arco practice helped speed this process up.

I just stumbled across this thread last night while searching for “how to restore old rosin.” Before and after shots:

I installed my set of 3885 Weichs a couple years ago and this is exactly what I did. I let the rosin build up and they settled in about a month. Still my current favorite set of strings.

I wasn’t technically in the challenge because I put the Spiros on in Dec. 2020, and the rules say you can’t have had Spiros for every month of 2021. But I still wanted to chime in here because I’m now coming up on the two year mark and still feeling great about how the sound annd playability...

Any recommendations for a moderately priced power supply that meets those criteria? I guess I’m also a bit confused because I understand that many people use the 1spot with no issues, so I thought maybe it was user error. On a side note—as a fellow Whovian I love your handle.

This is very encouraging—I have read the “they’re not an arco string” comments and sometimes second-guess myself as to whether Spiros are appropriate for section playing. But they can be, in the right hands. Cheers.

Yes, and possibly even a step backwards—the Preludes may not help you wake up your bass much, due to their construction and lower tension. I’d recommend holding out for the Spiros. IMO, YMMV, ABCDEFG, ETC.
