Double Bass All Hail Bob Gollihur! RIP

I think we all appreciate how Gollihur Music has contributed to the bass community in ways completely unrelated to their commercial transactions. I join others in expressing condolences to Mr. Gollihur's family.

Of course - I feel the same way and acknowledge his contributions outside the world of retail double bass; but Mr. Gollihur was an innovator so far and above other bass shop retailers before him because of the access he provided to all bass players around the world -- which just was not there before he came along. For Bob to realize and identify a need that was not being met whatsoever by anyone else involved in selling parts, accessories, and double bass instruments in the early days of the Internet, was a contribution that I would put up there with the most successful entrepreneurs in the world who likewise identified a need and solved it -- all with the creativity and innovation that would make these products attainable to us online. This includes we the consumers, not to mention the many vendors/dealers that he helped get started by offering their products online through the website.

I remember when the only way I could get anything for my bass in Corpus Christi in the mid-90s, was to write a correspondence letter to California to get signed up for the catalog from Lemur Music. Then I'd have to wait several weeks for that publication to come in; then drool over everything I wanted to upgrade my bass, fill out the order forms, and still have to wait even more weeks to come in. Bob Gollihur gave all of us the ability to interact online through his website for inquiries, questions. and concerns with any part or accessory we were interested in, all while providing the consumer with impeccable telephone and email customer service that explained everything so clearly. I consider Bob's entrepreneurial contributions to be right up there with the best of them for giving we -- the double bass playing community -- options we never had before.

Rest In Peace Mr. Bob Gollihur - and condolences to the entire Gollihur family. Mark - you have also been wonderful in continuing the greatness that is Gollihur Music. You always are willing to respond on these threads and help people out with anything they would ask you. I know you've personally helped me with contemplating string choices (I had no idea what a bumped set was until I talked to you about it), plus all of your pre-amp and pickup option conversations on Talkbass threads. In fact, your staff has recently helped me to pick out the bass stand I'm going to be ordering from your company soon for my new carved bass.

Your Dad's legacy will continue to live on through his memory and his revolutionary vision.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends. I unfortunately never knew Bob, but his legacy through his work and his family is a huge and continuing contribution to the double bass community, and I thank him and Mark profoundly for that. To Mark and to all of Bob's family and friends, may all of the good memories that Bob leaves behind quickly soothe you all during your grieving process.
