Double Bass All Hail Bob Gollihur! RIP

A true gentleman. My condolences to the whole family. I remember seeing the little ad in the back of Bass Player magazine for the new (at the time) K&K pickup in 1999. I called the number and Dieter answered the phone. He told me to call Bob. And that was how it started for me.

Oh, man. What a loss to everyone in the upright bass world, to say nothing of his family. I've thought so highly of the Gollihur folks for years keeping my little shop stocked when I needed stuff for a quick weekend setup job.

I just read the letter Mark sent out when I got up this morning.

I met him through his posts on the Bottom Line email list and then his web page full of extensive links to dealers, manufacturers, repairmen, teachers, etc. That was where the "all hail" thing first started. I talked to him on the phone a few times and became a customer of his shop as soon as it opened.

As Keith mentioned above, before Bob the only mail order catalog store in the USA was Lemur. In addition to getting K&K to design pickups for rockabilly users, he championed EA and Acoustic Image. He made inexpensive basses available by carrying Englehardt and then reaching out to European builders to deliver affordable carved basses to your door. The growth of his store coincided with my entry into seriously gigging on the DB and became my first call when looking for accessories like pickups, preamps, stands and strings.

Bob was once kind of enough to contact me about a Juzek bass he had found for sale near him. Considering I'm up in Massachusetts and he was in New Jersey near Philadelphia that was quite a surprise. I still have that bass 25 years later.

My condolences to Mark and his family.

RIP, Mr. Gollihur. I remember being a DB newbie many years ago and the wife of a good friend approached me about buying her husband a student DB. I didn't know much, but I knew I could send her to Bob and she'd get treated well, and she was.

WOW! What a great anectdote.

To all appearances, Bob's was a life well lived. That doesn't make the loss of a good man any less sad.

I never had a chance to talk with Bob, but have called his company every single time I needed anything since starting on upright. Thanks for starting something wonderful. Rest In Peace Bob.

I'm so sad by this. Read this news just now on facebook and quickly came here to see. RIP Bob, really can not wait to buy one of their basses. RIP Bob again thanks for being a great and honest salesman in the DB world.

Just emerged from vacation to this news. I’d like to add my name to the long, long list of players whose playing received a substantial boost from Bob’s thoughtful curating of essential bass resources. I’m glad the family business will continue to perpetuate his legacy. It’s quite a legacy.
