Double Bass ISB 2025 - who is going?

Not in the cards for me this year, but I hope y'all have a great experience. @Chris Fitzgerald I really enjoyed our hangout in Michigan. Maybe next one!

Double Bass Classical era concerto for bass tuned in 4ths?

Generally the Italians were tuned in 4ths and there isn't all the constant repetition of triad arpeggios to suggest that Capuzzi was for Viennese tuning. It works great with 4ths, regardless.

Double Bass Where can I get classical solo repertoire?

In addition to the Vance, you could get Suzuki Bass School: Bass Part, Vol.1, which has a bunch of good pieces for a fair price, and and sticks around the lower positions a bit more, although it does get you to the neck block (Simandl 4th position) halfway through. I like both collections a lot...

    Double Bass Carbon fibre bows

I was thinking of comparing price ranges, not Arcus's inflated press releases. S9! When I got mine, S8 was the top. Reminds me of Spinal Tap "This one goes to 11".

    Double Bass Carbon fibre bows

@LouisF Congratulations! It is hard to write about how a bow plays. For me, as someone north of middle age, I have adopted the slogan "Easy is good." My Arcus S8 (top of their line) is a terrific bow that with its lightness, requires an adjustment, but always in the direction of less force...

You can't compare an S5 to a Reid Hudson. Quite different categories.

Double Bass Who amongst you has played this?

I played his Suite Modale for my undergrad audition as a flute major a million years ago. He wrote very pleasant music. His music looks simple on the page, but I agree about the rhythmic fluidity of it. Not your standard 4 feel, ever, practially.

And then wouldn't they have to give it a German name? [snicker]

Double Bass Bowing location- from bridge to board

... and length of fingerboard. "Halfway between bridge and fingerboard" with a fingerboard that goes to high G versus the B a sixth below, is quite a different placement.

I'm glad bass isn't standardized like violins and cellos. Such creativity!

Double Bass Any ideas? Villa Lobos B.B #4

I'd hang out on the A string for the whole section. A lot easier on the hand than on D.

SOLD Codabow Infinity French Bow & Case NEW PRICE

WILL CONSIDER REASONABLE OFFERS. This Codabow Infinity model French bow was purchased new in Dec. 2021 and was used about 10 hours/week for 18 months. Since July 2022 it has been a back-up bow and rarely used. It does all the things well, and has a nice balance, but I just don't need it...

Double Bass Karr vs Rabbath, Bow Technique

I bought the Goss also, and it's rather well-written. Would be fun to hear it played by a pro.

Double Bass Karr vs Rabbath, Bow Technique

Jacob: A Little Concerto Goss: Concerto in E Minor If it had to be from the old times, Capuzzi, which has a fun 1st mvt. and a lovely 2nd. No Viennese arpeggio studies for me! First mvt. of Cimador is also a pleasant romp.
