Did you ever attempt to play Upright Bass -- how did it go?

40-something years ago I studied classical double bass for about 9 months. I had already taught myself to play bass guitar, so I knew the fingering, but learning to sight-read plus the bowing technique were more than I could handle. I had intended to take Grade 2, but it never happened. In the...

    Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

Ronnie Lane, Small Faces. Greatly under-rated melodic player. Also Herbie Flowers, veteran British session man who also plays upright bass and tuba.

    Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Contact your local Stagg dealer who will be able to order you a replacement neck, both types being available. Usefully, both styles now have the larger, reinforced peg-box, which improves a potential weak point of the first generation of these basses.

What do you know about the very rare VELVET HAMMER P-Bass Pickup?

When I was at school in about 1979, a friend's sister had a purple sparkle P-Bass copy (Columbus or Satellite - can't remember) which had a Velvet Hammer pickup. I remember the pickup covers with the embossed script. It must have been a retro-fit - this was an inexpensive (at the time) Japanese...

    Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

I was on the Thomann website and I noticed that they now sell a replacement neck for the Stagg, for €144 (£114.75). This is the version with the integral fingerboard, but with the revised and strengthened pegbox design. So if your Stagg has got damaged or worn, or if you are concerned about its...

    Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Just swapped the black control knobs for these chrome ones with black pearloid inserts. They will certainly be easier to see in gloomy conditions! Believe it or not, the Allparts stand at the London Acoustic Guitar/Electric Live Show was giving these knobs away as freebies, so I grabbed a couple...

It has happened to me too, especially in a confined space (bedroom recording studio, anyone?) You just have to be careful and keep an eye on the cable.

Double Bass Where to get Contrabass Balalaika?

Invalid Link Removed Not very expensive - under £400. Oh, and they are tuned to E A D like the bottom three strings of a double bass or bass guitar, and played (I'm not joking) with a leather boot-heel! I like the Fender-esque headstock on this one.

Double Bass Stagg owners only - what colour is your bass?

Mine is now my go-to bass. I'd leave it plugged in if it didn't drain the battery! My elder son, Thomas (14) was working out an acoustic blues guitar arrangement of "Iko Iko" yesterday, and I joined in on my Stagg. It rocks! I'll have to record it some time.

That looks really nice! All the photos I have previously seen of Violin Burst have made it look a bit artificial, but that's a very classy finish.

    Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

I read a lot about the Harley Benton/Palatino and the Stagg before making my decision, and that was four years ago. The impression I got was that while the HB was more like a traditional double bass in terms of its design and hardware, the Stagg actually had a better sound and was generally more...
