Post Pics of your "Unique" Bass

I do in fact - here's a clip from the CD we recorded some time back at Paisley Park studios. The whole CD was recorded on that 5-string (except for one Bach piece that I played on my standard cello). Note that I'm playing the bass lines, there is a viola and a violin on this track as well...

Post Pics of your "Unique" Bass

Sure! Glad you like it, it's a really nice instrument. I studied cello for a long time so playing in 5ths is very comfortable, an "octave cello" as you describe must sound amazing! I wanted the maker to keep this relatively close to a cello but also have it so that I could crank it up and...

Post Pics of your "Unique" Bass

This is my custom built Alan Carruth 5-string acoustic-electric cello, I had this made about 20 years ago. I play her just like an upright bass of sorts, the low string has a fingerboard extension so that the tuning is E-C-G-D-A. This instrument has a great sound sound whether I'm playing with...

Pros and cons of using a fretless bass

Someone made a great point earlier about other fretless instruments. I studied cello for 20 years before picking up the bass, so I'm actually more at home on one of my fretless basses. That said when it comes time for fast rock or songs that need a bright punch I use the fretted bass. Bottom...

    How many fretless basses?

Two, both unlined, both flatwound: - 1977 P-bass with maple neck modified to active P/J (great for thumping and funking) - 1980's Washburn 6-string conversion with rosewood (great for pop and fusion)

Fender Fretless Precision Bass - Post yours

Bought this heavily modified (hence relatively inexpensive) 1977 P-bass fretless 20 years back. Not terribly valuable but a killer sound. My advice would be not to do this to a vintage bass, if you have to have P/J versatility there are plenty of new options on the market... Love this thread by...

Most pitiful thing youve ever seen a bassist do live

Some great stories one here. Here's one of mine (my first post): In the band I was part of in the early 90's the guitarist/leader flatly refused to use a set list, he always wanted to "read the crowd" then just call out the next song with like 2 seconds notice like JB. Problem was he was usually...

    Greetings from the Big Apple

Hi all, Glad to be part of this forum. I'm a cellist who took up the bass guitar about 20+ years ago (has it been that long?), and played both cello and bass professionally in a group in Boston back in the late 80's. I've recently met up with some like-minded rockers here in NYC and...
