I think the general sentiment of this thread seems to be that ... there are plenty of different ways you can skin this particular cat.

I'm one of those wankers who likes to plug in, crank the amp up as loud as it will go, and then start slapping as fast as I possibly can. Just to p*ss off the long-haired wankers who are playing their drop-tuned 6-strings with the distortion cranked all the way up.

Technically, it's not a wooly mammoth, but you could cop that general tone with one.

Or you could just get an EQ, and cut the midrange between 500-800hz ... all the way out. And I'm sure you'd get roughly the same kind of effect. People who "like the Ampeg sound," in general, could probably find just as much satisfaction from a midrange EQ cut. Very generally speaking. And...

Makes a nice overdrive pedal. Good speaker sim. Hate the midrange suck, but at least you can dial it back in.

It really isn't fair. It's so much easier to sing and play the 6-string, because the rhythms are very seldom at odds, and God only knows whatever reason. It's just a natural thing to move your wrist when singing, and not not natural at all to work the tips of your fingers. Your bandmates look...

Would you consider a wooly mammoth clone (spot-on, exact), and a brand new (still in box) mxr108 10-band EQ pedal? I might also offer either one + 50 bucks. Also have TONS and tons of recording gear: microphones (dynamic, condenser, small and large diaph), active tube DI boxes (groove tubes)...

I actually wound up buying the regular "non-bass" version after auditioning it at the local shop -- not even knowing that there was an actual bass version available. :hmm: And I've been digging some of the settings on this thing so much, I haven't even bothered taking it back for exchange...

He mentioned a few times that it sounds like a tonebender. You could probably find some random clips on youtube or elsewhere for the Colorsound tonebender and bass fuzz ... or the Fulltone Sould Bender, and that would probably give you a pretty good idea.

I don't know if "gated" is what I meant so much by pinch. It's just that there's a point where the WM and a lot of the fuzz faces get real "spitty" sounding, particularly on bass, and I think that's what I'm getting at. I don't particularly like it when it reaches that level of saturation...

Very generally speaking, I don't hear a whole lot of difference between the Tonebender and Fuzz Face, and don't think there's much difference there in circuit design either. Have you messed around with the MXR-108 at all, and is this roughly in that same ballpark, I assume?

The Wooly Mammoth is basically a slightly modified fuzzface, and it's basic sound is still that of a fuzzface, but with a bit more "pinch" to it. And there are a million fuzzface clones out there. But of the ones I've demo'd the ones that come closest to that Wooly Mammoth "pinch" are: 1)...

But left in the part about reading it on the toilet. For added dramatic effect. :D The pedal version acts as middle man between amp and cabinet -- which would actually be more ideal, sonicallly (since the load would be that of an actual speaker). You'd just lose the isolation factor...
