    Yes, this is lame. Before I could afford covers, heavy black plastic garbage bags and a couple of towels got me through rainy days. I even made covers from garbage bags. Wow.

    Ride moocher?

    I've had bad experiences with giving rides in the past so I refuse to do it on a regular basis. I consider personal transportation as an important part of a musician's gear.

    Antares Basses?

    My first bass is an Antares with a P-shape body and 2 P-pickups. No shielding and Gibson style controls with fake neck through lines down the middle. Sounds pretty good. I got it for Christmas in 1983. I have no idea on resale since the one you mention is the only other one I have seen.

    My vote is a big +1 to restore/preserve as-is: Keep the body, load it with pickups, and dress it up. See if an exact neck replacement is cheaper than a rebuild. This bass has a history beyond it leaving the factory brand new so have fun with it the way it is now.

    "NEXT" on the first band. I wouldn't want the aggravation because when I have experienced that, it turned into hierarchical mumbo-jumbo. See how the second band audition goes and keep your options open until you commit.
