    What’s the deal with flats?

I came from upright bass - all upright strings are flatwound - it just made sense to me. Flats also get me closer to the upright bass sound that I'm used to hearing and have come to love.

    Double Bass Spirocore Stark

I bought a bow from him a few years ago. While there, I remember him telling me that was his favorite E string and how disappointed he was that Pirastro discontinued it. In all fairness, when he saw I had spiros on my bass he told me I should get some real strings.

Double Bass Anybody have any experience with No Label Romanian DBs?

I was thinking of the Wultur Corsini model when I saw the pictures, but it's hard to tell without a straight view of the body. I have a Wultur Carcassi model (Romanian workshop and wood) and it's all the bass I need - sometimes a bit too much, she's a big girl. Keith, I'd encourage you to...

    “Heavy Metal” Jazz?

Opeth? I haven't followed them lately and I've been out of the metal scene for a while. They are definitely metal, but I remember them having some jazzy sounds. The Drapery Falls is one of their classic songs and I remember the two-album Deliverance/Damnation being a bit different than their...

Double Bass Helicore for 5th tuning

I was thinking in terms of string-to-string balance, that having such a tight thing wouldn't fit with the rest of the set. I could have made that clearer. I have had some problems downtuning A to G and the bow with lighter gauges. I never had a heavy A string to try it.

Double Bass Helicore for 5th tuning

Dunno, but I might consider a heavy A tuned down to G. I think tuning up the F# would be incredibly tight (solo sets are general higher tension at pitch than orchestral sets). Have you tried contacting D'Addario about it? In my experience, they are pretty responsive and might be able to offer...

    Double Bass Fifths Tuning!

There used to be a set of Velvet's Compas 180 Suit for fifths tuning - I don't know if they are still making it. Believe it or not, I've tuned a good old Spiro Mitt E down to C and it worked alright, a little loose. Perhaps a stark E would substitute well. For me the G (III) string was always...

    Double Bass Fretless Banjo???

Years ago when I was at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA I saw a 3-piece - drums, electric bass, and electric banjo. I can't remember their name for the life of me but they were amazing.

    Double Bass Spirocore Stark

I've tuned like this (both CGDG and CGDA) using a full set of mittels. The C was weaker up close but really blossomed out front. I'm sure the Stark would be even better. The worst string for bowing was dropping the A down to G, not sure why.

Double Bass I realized that my bass is too large to play sitting down

I'm 5' 6" and put on some extra weight after college - this was after the college weight :( - and my bass has a pretty long back and table so it's pretty much a 7/8 but a bit narrow around the middle, unlike me. I wanted to play on a low stool with both feet on the floor but that didn't work for...
