    I can play pretty well as I was in the all south jersey band for bass clarinet and thus I understand rhythm pretty well. But I'm a complete newb in terms of electronics and all of that. What does a pre-amp do?

    Brand new strings pretty much. Light guage. It's only on slap though. I'm working on technique so it's probably not all there yet but when I messed around with a squire j bass at guitar center the other day I got an awesome sound out of it.
