Unsolicited advice for bandleaders from a frequent sub

For my 'full-time' gigs, I chart as many songs as I can and give them to the BL just in case I need a sub at any point. (I usually find my own subs, but in case the BL needs to find one...) And then, of course, my first question to any sub is, 'can you read charts?' I have done this for a few...

How should a 3 piece band set up?

Lots of humor in this one, but I am curious if the drums are generally run through the mains. If they are, then you can put your drummer anywhere. In the 3 piece I played in most recently, we would put the drummer in back off to stage right and angled him so the bass drum sorta pointed at me...

Double Bass Christian McBride remembers Sonny Rollins

Thanks for that link. Goosebumps. It's an amazing reminder that we should never take what we do for granted. It doesn't have to be Sonny Rollins, or Ornette Coleman. We can still be in awe of those we play with and the music we make.

Soft low E and F on P basses

Amen to this. I chased a muted low G on a Fender P (EADG) at rehearsal for weeks. Finally realized it's the setup there. Small amp sitting on a carpeted floor and a room that just sucks that frequency out of the air. The solution to this particular issue is to return the bass to its owner and...

The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

Thank you TomB and others that have responded. The issue is that there is a slack when you tune. This isn't uncommon, but once it's in tune, there appears to be a natural tendency for the tuner to revert to that slack spot and slowly move out of tune. This is occurring in two of the 4 tuners...

The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster in the short scale section. I have a question about replacement tuners. A 1967-ish Gibson EB 2 recently followed me home and while in great shape, needs some modernizing in order to be useful in a live situation. Most urgent are the tuners...

The Bass In His Office Made The Sale

Glad your kid is okay!! I keep a couple basses in my home office and don't blur my background during meetings. I have lost count of the conversations that have gone much better due to the personal connection over music. Even if other people aren't musicians, the basses let them know that I am...

Creating VISIBLE fret position lines ATOP a fretless, bound fingerboard….

This is the way I would go. Cutting a line in binding might end up doing more damage than good. Drilling a hole and dropping a dot that is fully surrounded by the binding would be structurally less scary. Maybe less cool looking, but it'd work.

    Studio Headphones.

Second this. I have 2 pairs with diff resistance(s?) and they are good at the job. Maybe not amazing, but for the price and comfort, I like them.

    Almost none more black instruments?

Fodera Emperor 5 in black over ash with no grain filler. It's a beast. Took over the job from the standard on the left.

Any info on this bass ??

Is it just my OCD, or has that neck shifted in the neck pocket? Nothing drives me crazier than string spacing issues...Probably easy fix.
