Thank you TomB and others that have responded. The issue is that there is a slack when you tune. This isn't uncommon, but once it's in tune, there appears to be a natural tendency for the tuner to revert to that slack spot and slowly move out of tune. This is occurring in two of the 4 tuners...

This is the way I would go. Cutting a line in binding might end up doing more damage than good. Drilling a hole and dropping a dot that is fully surrounded by the binding would be structurally less scary. Maybe less cool looking, but it'd work.
